Move over, Christmas -- today's the real happiest day of the year. It's Happy Hour Day, when we honor cheap fried foods, domestic pints and getting an early start on another long night. In addition to our freedom, we can also thank the United States Navy for creating the concept of a happy hour back in the 1920s.

According to Wikipedia, "happy hour" was slang for a scheduled entertainment period on board a ship during which boxing and wrestling bouts took place; this was a valuable opportunity for sailors to let off the steam accumulated during long periods at sea. Back on shore, the speakeasies got wind of the idea and turned it into a cheap drunkfest for incorrigibles like us.

To help with the celebrating, our friends at myopenbar.com provided us with a few of the top Happy Hours around the country. Check them out for many, many more happy hours and open bars across the country. Don't forget to tell us about your favorite happy hours in the comments. Viva la PBR!

NEW YORK CITY:

Acme Bar & Grill
Tonight and every Tuesday, the featured special is the $2 Acme Brew and Thursdays are all about $4 Hurricanes.
Located at 9 Great Jones St., between Lafayette St. and Broadway

Landmark Tavern
We like the wings-to-booze ratio here. Every weekday from 4 to 7 p.m. get 10-cent buffalo wings and buy-one-get-one on all drinks. -- 626 11th Ave., at 46th St.

Rudy's Bar and Grill
All drinks here are cheap, but the best deal is Rudy's Red, the house's own somewhat swill-ish brew served in plastic "buckets" for $7.75. Bonus: free hot dogs! -- 627 9th Ave., at 44th St.

CHICAGO:

The Long Room
This is more of a spot to lay low with a date or a small group of homeys, so Tuesday night is a perfect night to swing in. Nothing helps lead to an easygoing time like $1 cans of cheap sauce and $2 Beam shots. -- 1612 W. Irving Park Rd., North Center

Ola's Liquors
Polish beer? Check. Polish rock on the jukebox? Check. Polish-speaking men on bar stools? CheckMATE.
$1 Slashie Shots, $1 shots and cheap beer every day starting around 5-ish. -- 947 N. Damen Ave., Ukrainian Village

Poag Mahone's
When GQ says you have one of the top 20 burgers in the U.S. to try before you die and Oprah starts throwing out props for you, life is good. This place is completely focused on the business crowd, however, so hipsters beware. -- 175 W. Jackson Blvd.

LOS ANGELES:

Cha Cha Lounge
It's always happy hour at the tiki-themed Cha Cha. During their actual happy hour (5-8 p.m.) well drinks are $2.50 and Pabst is on tap for $1.50. When the still-festive hours begin, these prices only get rocked up a notch by a dollar. -- 2375 Glendale Blvd.

Royal Clayton's
It's fairly standard happy hour fare available from 3 to 6, but with small adjustments in the fares. We're talking $5 pizzas and $3 drafts, which most of us couldn't resist. So belly up to a royal standard of living with prices that serfs can afford. Brought to you by the makers of feudalism, the pain reliever of the British aristocracy. -- 1855 Industrial St., D-Town

SAN FRANCISCO:

El Toro Taqueria
With $1 tacos and $2 beers from 3-5 p.m., it's one hell of a fiesta that comes just in time to wake you up from that mid-afternoon siesta. -- 17th & Valencia, Mission

901 Columbus Cafe
The amateur economists at 901 Columbus continue their hilarious banner-making: "Beat the Recession!" has transformed into "$timulus Package!" Filling us full of $2 drafts from 5-10 seems like a fine stimulus plan to us. -- 901 Columbus Avenue, North Beach
