Today, many hip-hop songs are fine vintage classics. For example, Tribe's meditation on romance, "Bonita Applebaum," or maybe Pete Rock and CL Smooth's "T.R.O.Y.," a rap about life and family. Maceo's "Nextel Chirp," on the other hand, feels pretty dated. Hip-hop is a culture obsessed with having the latest gadgets and flossiest digital items, but tech moves so fast that rapping about it isn't exactly a recipe for a timeless jam. Beyond that little ditty from a few years ago, hip-hop has a nice track record of references that today seem quaint.
