The kids seem to like the statue of Fred Rogers that was unveiled in Pittsburgh recently, and they've signaled their approval by running their paws all over the 11-foot tall 7,000-lb. representation of TV's Mr. Rogers. The wife of the late children's-show host also gives the bronze sculpture a hearty thumbs up, declaring that her husband would have been "extremely" pleased with how his tribute turned out.
Members of the art community haven't responded as enthusiastically, with some calling out the sculpture's lack of warmth. But perhaps the harshest criticism comes from talk show host Jimmy Kimmel, who remarked that the statue "made the nicest man in the world look like a mud monster."
No doubt there is what could be called a muddy aesthetic to the Robert Berks creation. However, it's also the case that such an abstract rendering fits the legacy of a man who encouraged us all to use our imagination and embrace the world of make believe.

Obviously you never saw the show, Cindy. He's putting his sneakers on, which he did at the beginning of every show.

Why does Fred look like Obama? Of all the great sculpture artists in the world, why would they select someone who barely captured the likeness? Is this another attempt to convince us that
bad art is good art. They're already doing this in the recording industry, movies, American Idol
and So You Think You Can Dance. Who are they kidding? Any number of fabulous artists would
have captured the spirit of Fred Rogers better than this rough, nubby looking failure. As Simon Cowell would say...."Sorry, It's just not good enough!"

Good thing they said who it was. If the kid's like it, art critics don't matter.

It seems like just a plain regular ole statue woulda done Mr Rogers just fine. There's a time for creativity and a time for just plain common sense. But, it's Yankees making decisions.

Mr. Rogers...such a great man! I'm not too fond of the statues' style either but it's not horrible, it's an art technique. It's just great that they have memorialized him! My brothers and I actually played with Mr. Rogers in his yard several times when we were little...he lived right here in Columbia SC! Such a nice man, it wasn't just a character! :)

Jimmy Kimmel was right....it does look like a mud all over the statue. I would hate to see what a wax sculpture of Mr. Rogers would look like if its done by the same artist. Scary!!!!!

I think the statue is great. Mr. Rogers was a positive role model and teacher for my children when they were very young. Not only did he teach them to use their imagination he also showed reality segments in his show which were very interesting.

I agree with Kimmel. The statue looks like it's cast from wads of gum or something.
