The kids seem to like the statue of Fred Rogers that was unveiled in Pittsburgh recently, and they've signaled their approval by running their paws all over the 11-foot tall 7,000-lb. representation of TV's Mr. Rogers. The wife of the late children's-show host also gives the bronze sculpture a hearty thumbs up, declaring that her husband would have been "extremely" pleased with how his tribute turned out.
Members of the art community haven't responded as enthusiastically, with some calling out the sculpture's lack of warmth. But perhaps the harshest criticism comes from talk show host Jimmy Kimmel, who remarked that the statue "made the nicest man in the world look like a mud monster."
No doubt there is what could be called a muddy aesthetic to the Robert Berks creation. However, it's also the case that such an abstract rendering fits the legacy of a man who encouraged us all to use our imagination and embrace the world of make believe.

i used to watch mr rogers with both my children. while his manner of speaking would put me to sleep, my children and grandchildren sat before the tv and were interested to a point that they would talk about it at the dinner table. i also thought he was the calmist, friend.teacher and mentor of little children on tv at that time. he is missed and always will be. the statue does him no justice it looks like it is about 500 yers ago. it seems that the artist should be brought back to finish it or get an artist that can make him a little warmer.as he really was and not like a piece of work that looked like the sculpter was in a constant state of anger.

It's not about the art community or Jimmy Kimmel, it's about the millions of kids and adults who watched Mr. Rogers through out the years.

Why don't we comment on the statue in the words of a typical Pittsburgher: "Yinz an'at are jagoffs."

Mr. Rogers should have been remembered in a much better way than in an incomplete "looking" statue. Yes, he was a good, kind and Christian man, AND he deserved better than this! True this statue does look like Obama picking at his foot. Surely someone got the statues mixed up!!!!

This is a prime example of artist ego. The image isn't important - the artists PERSONAL CONCEPT is the entire point.
Result? 90% tribute to the "creativity" of the artist, 10% tribute to Mr. Rogers, who is quite unrecognizable in this Impressionistic Travesty.
This statue could have looked like Fred Rogers. Instead it DOES look like a "Mud Monster." "nuff said.

I remember that one of my kids didn't like Mr. Rogers much... he was about 18 months old and would throw stuffed animals at the T.V. as soon as he heard the little theme tune come on.

Sorry, The artist did not at all caputure the image of Mr. Rogers. I agree with the people that do not like it. What is wrong with making a statue that actually looks like the person. If it was not stated who it is, I know I would never have known, and I watched the show long after my childhood. I know what he looks like and that statue is not him. I concider it disrepectful and a horrible impression of this wonderful man. I don't thing any kid would have known who it is until someone told them. Melt it down and make a statue that actually looks like him please. This artist sucks. If you are going to represent a being, at least make it look like them. Does not capture anything about him.

i think its a nice tribute to make a statue of him, i loved mister rogers as a child, but they could've gotten a child to do the statue and then there'd at least be an excuse for it looking so sad and miserable. kimmel's right- it looks like mud (as is your 2yr old who commmented it looked like poop, winter). when i remember him i think of really happy, colorful, imaginative things. the texture of this sculpture makes me think of decaying, rusting, dying sadness.
