On December 12th, Help Portrait is asking photographers to team up with local charitable organizations to take pictures of people in need as a unique holiday present. You don't have to be a professional -- anyone who likes to use a camera can participate. The idea is to give it as a present to someone who wouldn't normally receive such an gift, such as the homeless or those living on assistance.
But is this "charity" really just a self-indulgent way to feel like you're doing something helpful, while giving those in need the one gift they couldn't possibly have any use for? Not to be cynical, but how about food or a warm bed instead?
The folks at Help Portrait say they want to use the photo as a stepping stone to offering our time, food, a blanket or anything else. And it does seem from this promotional video like the subjects are enjoying themselves. Keep reading to give us your take on Help Portraits.

I think it is a fantastic idea. It seems to me that:
in a modern civilised country, charity should extend beyond mere subsistence needs, and should be able to offer the less fortunate some dignity and comfort
it’s well recognised that people value family photographs more than almost any material possession. They are often the only thing people will rescue from a home fire.
as such, the gift of family photographs can offer a significant and enduring value to the recipient relative to the intrinsic cost and effort of the giving
further, the greatest psychological challenge that the homeless or underprivileged often face is a sense of alienation, dislocation and of not belonging. It is hoped that these photos (particularly the family photos) can be a small but powerful tool in reinforcing positive messages of “I am someone, I matter, I belong”.
If you'd prefer to give blankets, food or anything else to the less fortunate then you absolutely should do so. It seems, though, that the most cynical tend to be those that do nothing, and like to criticise the efforts of others.

I visited USA a couple of times and was surprised how many poor people and homeles people you have. And most of you Americans act like its their fault that they are homeles, poor and not educated. You should be ashamed of yourselves! You are the richest country in the world (and most advanced isn't that how you like to think about yourself?) and you don't have the money to take care of your people? 40 million people in US do not have basic health insurance, that is unthinkable for us in Europe. Good part of your population is in jail, and the reason why they are in jail is because they come from low social background without chance to get any education and status in society. You even have a death penalty and you kill mentaly ill people. You still have racists walking around. It is terrible how you live. You are turning into strange unhuman society. America used to be a good example before, now...not so much anymore. Your movies are also getting worse every year and we in Europe are tired of your actors and actresses and boring directors, btw..Back on topic, this is typical example, some "genius mind" from some Photo Store thinking they are doing a great thing by making photo of poor homeles people and giving them that as a gift?! You people are emotionaly and socialy immature. Most of you are living in a world that is not real. Sorry but that is my impression of your society.
