We wouldn't exactly call LL Cool J's new greatest hits album "All World 2" an essential purchase -- after all, four of the tracks appeared on his 1996 compilation "All World." The newly released disc does manage, however, to highlight the sheer depth of Mr. James Todd Smith's back catalog.

A flick through LL's photographic back catalog, meanwhile, offers a different retrospective of the man's career, from shell-toe-and-jumpsuit-clad fledgling rhymer to suited-and-booted rap elder statesman. In between are countless sartorial hits and misses (plus a good deal of time spent without a shirt on).

The thing about the man the ladies know as "Cool James" is that, while he may not be the coolest dude in hip-hop -- Hova, anyone? -- his admirable longevity and amiable willingness to try his hand at various styles means he always gets it right eventually. So, for every "In the House," there's a "Mama Said Knock You Out." For every one-pant-leg-confusingly-rolled-up, there's a kick-ass old-school outfit like the one pictured.

Head below the jump to see how it's put together ...

D&G Dolce & Gabbana Necklace
You'll have to spend some serious time starring in family-friendly sitcoms to afford a rope like LL's. This chic gold D&G necklace isn't exactly cheap, but it is a more plausible option for a baller on a budget. ($254 from Zappos.com)

Evisu Track Sweat Top
Apart from "The Goonies," the ubiquity of awesome track tops was probably the coolest thing about the '80s. If you aren't lucky enough to own a pristine bit of vintage Fila to fully re-create LL's style, this funky Evisu piece channels the classic look with a dash of '00s suave thrown in for good measure. ($221 from Asos.com)

Slab Rock Hat
Say what you will about LL, he sure did love his Kangol bucket hats. Us, we're not quite as convinced. This Quiksilver number achieves the same general effect -- without making you look quite so much like a confused fisherman. ($28 from Quiksilver.com)

Obey Coin Ring
This natty Obey ring offers a subtle shout-out to old-school hip-hop bling. ($32 from UrbanOutfitters.com)
