Villains (and villainesses) often have one goal in mind: destroy the good guy. If they're anything, it's single-minded. However, while their attempts on screen succeed or fail during a movie's climax, that's not the only climax they're interested in. When the projector stops, the credits roll, and the audience shuffling out either laments or applauds. Even the most vile antagonist feels a pang of sadness knowing he won or lost without a partner in crime to share it with.
