Middle-age men dance awkwardly to signal that they're sexually unavailable. After comparing the dancing styles and confidence levels of 14,000 people of different ages, British psychologist Peter Lovatt concluded that there may be an evolutionary reason for so-called "dad dancing." Men between the ages of 35 and 60 attempt complex dance moves with limited coordination in part to signal to younger women that they should look elsewhere for a partner.
"It might be that middle-age men have passed their natural reproductive age, and probably have a family already, and don't feel they have to attract younger women anymore," said Lovatt. Previous studies have found that women can gauge a man's testosterone levels via his dance moves. (Though, there are ways to juice those levels.)
Does this also mean men who have always danced like they have a broken foot are evolutionarily programmed to never mate? Sadly, we think that it might.
