While it might be a bit of a stretch to declare football the religion of males, there are certainly a lot of guys who follow their favorite team with a religious fervor. The New Hope Baptist Church in East Orange, N.J., attempts to tap into this energy one Sunday a year when they hold a service in which the congregation is encouraged to wear football jerseys, football-style banners and posters adorn the chapel walls and the faithful do the wave between songs of worships. Following the festivities there is a tailgate party of hot dogs and chips. (But no thermoses of vodka-spiked fruit punch, we're assuming.)
The Rev. Dwight Gill started the tradition as way to draw men into his church, which is 75 percent female. This November, the service drew almost 2,000 worshipers overall, and the church picked up 10 new male members in its aftermath.
We couldn't help noticing the one thing missing from the whole production is any actual football. Which is why we'd probably tell the Reverend, "Nice try, but we're going to catch the pre-game show on ESPN instead."

Maybe they should take lessons from the Catholic Church: Mother Mary is the bait for men. The Mother of the Church? What man would dare say that he doesn't love his mother?

I was once a member of a church that started the Sunday morning service at 10:30 so we could have the usual hour of worship and still be home for the 12:00 kickoff. It worked for me!

They can lure you in with every trick in the book, but if that is the only reason you come to church, might as well stay home to watch the game. You are no closer to Heaven than when you were home in your jeans. The Good Lord knows your heart. He said Have no other gods before Me. Anything you cherish more than Him is your god. You don't have to attend any church to find the god you really want and desire. Some churches put on "feeds" to get you in. Don't mean you are a fat Christian, just maybe a fat Sinner. Who really knows? God does.

No matter whether or not you go to church, you wind up on the other side reviewing and judging your life yourself. You can worship God in your home. He doesn't mind. As long as you believe in Him and remember that he loves you and you do good for your fellow man, you're fine. Your devotion to your religion doesn't weigh on whether or not you go to church or the synagogue. It's what you do everyday and what have you done for others.

If they have to be conned into attending, what is the point?
Oh yeah...The donation.

If you wish to encourage men to attend church, you need to, well, ENCOURAGE men. Society's habit of putting men down, of teaching men to put themselves down, assuming men are guilty (or wrong) because they are male, and all similar offences has also permeated the church. Teach women and children to afford the same respect to men that they expect to receive themselves, and I wouldn't be suprised if you saw an improvement in society all around. And I suspect that's what Jesus wants from us.

If you get them in with football the devil will get them out with basketball or socker. If they won't heed to Gods call there is no hope for them.Using worldly things will not work. THE BIBLE is the only thing that does.

Now to do that it is far fetched. Have the service relate to football in a way that Jesus is on their team and not let the devil score. I like footbal, basketball, and baseball. I say preach in the message of the particular sports season and always preach Win with Jesus on your team.

Here's an idea. A church buys a couple of big screen TVs and hook them up to watch football on Sunday. There are a few strings attached: you gotta attend the service before the game (arrive no-later-than ?); donations WILL be made for snacks during the game (the donations will pay for the snacks & the TVs); during the game intermissions the preacher will ask people at random questions about the sermon, if you don't answer correctly you will required to leave immediately {premise: you listen to GODS' Word to watch GODS' screen}.
To those who against such bribery; GOD has the ultimate BRIBE "Do as I say or NO Heaven for you".

Jesus himself said that we should be a Gentile to the Gentiles and a Jew to the Jews. He meant that we should reach out to people in any way that they will connect to. When we as Christians find unique ways to draw people to church and hopefully to Jesus, that's wonderful. I think that it's perfectly fine for this church to use football as a ploy. Obviously it works; The article says that last year 10 new men joined the church after this football Sunday.

It is NOT the responsibility of the church to "draw" people in. When Jesus left, he said to preach the gospel unti all have heard, not all are saved. Many of the same people attending this "football Sunday" have heard and rejected the teaching of Jesus Christ. They are there for the tailgating and food. Just remember, any gimmick will run it's course and not work! Also, you were happy that 10 men joined their church. Really - But the real question is did the 10 men continue to come and be active in church.

Wonder if they are going to have the church organist play the same type of music? If the preacher says something, instead of the usual "amen" the organist plays one of those six note pre-cheer things?

You, the News Media, call attending church once a year, "The faithful"? Sounds more like the faithless to me.
Try attending First Baptist Church of Orlando, if you are ever in the Greater Orlando area, where Dr. David Uth, our Senior Pastor, would just love to meet you any time of the year.
