We were a little bit concerned when we first read about the new film "Sherlock Holmes." After all, the brilliant, fictional detective is in many ways the quintessential Victorian English gentleman: dapper, sophisticated and hopped out of his skull on cocaine and morphine. Now, does that the really sound like superb actor and all-around cool dude Robert Downey Jr.? (Well, other than the last bit?)If Mr. Downey Jr.'s slightly Jack Sparrow-esque version of an English accent weren't bizarre enough, there's director Guy Ritchie, a man -- passport status notwithstanding -- whose visions of cheeky cockney gangster-filled London Town are about as authentic as the "Wee Britain" that appeared on "Arrested Development."
Yet, despite these misgivings, we're optimistic that Downey and co. have retained some of the spirit of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's classic detective stories -- due, mainly, to the sartorial choices that the "Sherlock Holmes" cast' members made for the movie's London premiere this week. The former Hollywood bad boy tipped his hat to Holmes with his own cultural version of sleuth chic, channeling Elliot Ness in a dandy '30s pinstriped getup. Co-star Jude Law (Dr. Watson), meanwhile, brought a touch of oh-so-English flair, with a rakish scarf-and-suit combo.
Check out how we'd recommend re-creating the look after the jump.
Traveler Lower Crown Fedora Packable Hats
Hollywood dudes rarely make a splash on the red carpet -- at least not in a good way. They tend to play it safe in a dinner jacket -- while the ladies take the fashion headlines -- or go too far in the other direction and turn up in something inappropriately casual. Downey's daringly dapper ensemble showed his peers how men could own the entrance. ($30 from JosBank.com)
Charles Tyrwhitt Charcoal Pinstripe English Suit Jacket
Boldly combining two shades of pinstripes, Downey's head-turning outfit offered a classically manly silhouette with a hint of high fashion swagger. A traditional, well-cut suit jacket -- like this one, from Charles Tyrwhitt -- is your copycat starting point. ($280 from CTShirts.com)

Forzieri Small Paisley Print Wool and Silk Reversible Scarf
From knife-fighting, scooter-riding mods to the most foppish of aristocratic cads, the silk scarf is a British fashion staple. Pair this elegant paisley number from Forzieri with a simple, clean suit -- a la Jude Law -- for a subtly boho effect. ($98 from Forzieri.com)
