These are the 50 moments that we geeked out on in 2009. Hop in our DeLorean and travel back to the recent past with us.
50. Real-Life Spider-Man Is a MenaceYour friendly neighborhood Spider-Man got a whole lot less friendly after several dastardly impersonators committed crimes while wearing his costume. First there was the Spidey street performer who was busted after getting into an altercation with a pedestrian. (Seems those costumed heroes can't keep their hands to themselves.) Then a Spider-Man/Spider-Woman duo were caught on tape robbing a pizza parlor. (Isn't that more of a Ninja Turtle thing?) We can just hear J. Jonah Jameson happily chomping on his cigar.
49. Muppets Do "Bohemian Rhapsody"Ever wonder what a classic Queen hit would look like performed by the Muppets? Well, thanks to the great folks at Muppet Studio, we now have the answer. It was a viral video so epic, we're surprised it didn't happen sooner. Honestly, the whole thing could have just been Animal saying "mama" over and over again and we'd be happy.
48. "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2" Leads to Sudden Rash of Sick Days
Despite only recently being released, "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2" is by far the biggest game of the year. It's also scored some of the best reviews, joining "Borderlands" and "Uncharted 2: Among Thieves" on the list of must-have games. Expect the game to lead to everything from failed marriages to missed funerals.
47. Nathan Fillion Reprises "Firefly" Role for Halloween
Nathan Fillion gave "Firefly" fans a Halloween surprise when he dressed up like Mal, his space-cowboy character from Joss Whedon's cult sci-fi show, for an episode of ABC's "Castle." While we doubt this will lead to a reunion, we hope other "Firefly" cast members follow suit. Who wouldn't want to see "V" alien Morena Baccarin back in her space-hooker costume?
46. Life-Size "Gundam" Robot In celebration of the popular anime series' 30th anniversary, a life-size Gundam robot standing a whopping 59 feet was erected in Tokyo. See, Michael Bay? The Japanese respect their fictional robots; they don't give them visible testicles and allow dogs to urinate on them.
45. Man Builds House From LEGOsSure, you've built castles and spaceships with LEGOs. But have you ever assembled an entire house? Toy nut and "Top Gear" host James May has. The two-story, multicolored home (featuring a working bathroom) was created with over three million LEGO bricks. That's gotta be one uncomfortable bed.
44. "World of Warcraft" Freak-Out Kid Goes ViralWoW produces a lot of, uh, passion in its subscribers, as evidenced by the viral hit where a young man freaks out after his mom cancels his account. Over the course of the epic two-minute video, the kid appears to have a seizure, rips off his clothes, attempts to stick a remote control in a very uncomfortable place and hits himself in the head with a shoe. Fake or not, it's the most entertaining WoW-related video since those Mr. T "Night Elf Mohawk" ads.
43. Monty Python Reunites for 40th Anniversary
The Monty Python gang reminisced about silly walks and herrings one more time at a special event in New York City honoring their 40th anniversary. The event coincided with an IFC documentary spotlighting their history and groundbreaking comedic legacy. So if you've noticed a sudden increase in utterances of the word "ni!", that's why.
42. Kristin Wiig Wears "Star Wars"-Inspired Dress to the Emmys
Geek chic rarely makes an appearance on the red carpet. So we have to give it up to "Saturday Night Live"'s Wiig, who showed up at the Emmys wearing a Darth Vader-inspired dress. If only she had won that night, perhaps she would have demonstrated the heavy breathing feature.
41. Project Natal Makes the Controller Obsolete
When Microsoft debuted the top-secret Project Natal at E3 back in June, the world saw a brief vision of the future of gaming. No longer would we be forced to mash buttons or swing a tampon-shaped Wiimote. Thanks to Project Natal's revolutionary sensor, our hands would be free to grab a handful of kettle chips whilst getting fragged by some 14-year-old from Sweden in "Halo ODST." While it won't be out until late next year, we eagerly await technology to get one step closer to "Minority Report."
