Some things in the world are irresistible to a child. Wet cement demands to be stepped in or written on. Markers need to be used on walls and human flesh. And in the presence of a camera you must do something obscene, like this little basketball fan who throws up the bird for ESPN's viewers. At a Villanova basketball game, with ESPN's cameras taking a momentary break to scan the audience, our commentators opt to focus on some children with ice cream and reflect on what it means to be kids enjoying themselves during the holidays.
And then one of the mischievous little pixies flips them right off. The best part is the dad notices and seems to have no idea what to do. Click through to see the video.

To all those people who think that the way to do a victory symbol is to hold your hand up and make a v sign, the hand is facing the wrong way. If the palm faces toward your face, it means up yours.

Look at the boy's face. He is not being nasty in any sense. His face is open and innocent. Obviously he is trying to flash a V for Villanova. And Dad was perfect in his response. Anyone who has kids or works with them can see that the facial expression does not match a nasty gesture.

Sorry, he gave the middle finger to try to look cool, but dad caught him fast. That is not a V sign.
Anyway, how is this newsworthy? To the author of this piece, are you using Youtube as your source for stories????

No, look again. First he smiles and waves. He has a chip in his hand and dips it and takes a bite out of the chip leaving half of the chip still in his hand. He starts to try to make the V sign and does it pretty well considering he is still holding half a chip in that same hand. He seems shocked and gets embarrassed when his dad stops him, and he hunches over in his chair. Given the immediate response to his father's "correction", I doubt that the boy would have been a kid that would give the bird in front of his father. And if he had in fact been the kind of kid to do that, he probably would have laughed instead of hunching over in embarrassment from having been "corrected" in front of the cameras. Poor kid. The only newsworthy thing about this is that the writer is an idiot for trying to make this newsworthy. Nice going Ian Firtey!!

OOPS, Meant to say Nice going IAN FORTEY for giving such a nice Holiday Gift to this young man and his family. You are so kind and considerate and should be so proud of yourself! Pat yourself on the back for your overwhelming kindness and your knack for picking up such a great news scoop!

Well, I think that a series of two-quart enemas should get this bad little boy straightened out!

It's typical of behavior that has become common in our society. I don't care weather you support our president or not, but to have one of our elected representatives call out "you lie" during a speech given by the president is a lesson well learned by our youth. Anything is acceptable and decent behavior is not the norm.

The person who wrote this article really needs to check his facts first. The boy is actually trying to give the V sign for Villanova, but he has food in his hand and it throws him off. He wasn't flipping the bird at anyone.
Everyone have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!!
God Bless!

The kid does wave at first but does flip the bird (sorry all you peaceniks the world is not the wonderful perfect dream place you think it is - kids do give the finger). The article is wrong because the Dad did react by slapping his son's hand down. Obviously he saw the "bird" too and he was there!

I believe he was trying to do the peace sign also, but with the food in his hand he switches so as not to lose his food, over-reaction probably would have caught me doing the same as the dad, just a reaction knowing what it means(the one finger) and on tv, but I think the child was geniune in his trying to be good with the peace sign,

I agree with most posters here, the boy was trying to give a peice sign, and if you take the time to look, you can see his index finger was extended, but was held back because he was holding something in that hand. So don't be so quick to jump on the childs' ass, and yes, the commentator owes the Father of that child an appology, for defamation. That child didn't go from smiling and waving to just fliping the bird for christs sakes, Open your friggen eyes and take a careful look you jerks, and that goes for his Father as well, for jerking his neck on national TV ! Sincerely, Robert

You people certainly expect a lot from the media. Did you think they could get it right the first time? They like to broadcast what they think (which doesn't occur very often or in very much depth. He was showing a "V", which, to the media is anything they want to make it.

This is so ridiculous! It's obvious he had two fingers up then put one down so he wouldn't drop his ice cream! As someone else said, if I were the family I would be saying something. Stupid. I don't understand why the news has to make crap up and make this little boy look bad.

What do you mean the dad had no idea what to do? He pushed down the kid's hand and he spoke to him. What did you want him to do? Laugh? Smack the kid on national TV? Beat the kid to a bloody pulp? Ignore the whole thing. Given the situation, the dad did the best he could; you're making a big deal about nothing!

As one who has thrown my share of Birds over the years : of course that's what he was doing !!! Ian Fortey, what do YOU mean, the dad is at a loss ? In the vid I'm seeing, Dad immediately corrects Son and seems to be telling him to behave himself. I'm wishing everyone involved a happy and peaceful Christmas and safe and warm New Year and using no hand signals.

I'd flip this kid a bone..........the bones in my hand strategically placed unto his bottom!
What the hell is wrong with parents today. Why aren't you teaching your kids respect?
I don't want to appear as I'm a dinosaur cause Im not! I get that times change. I was a product of the 60's. But for God's sake, instill in your kids the LEAST bit of moral value and respect for others. I would have NEVER thought of "flipping the bone" to anyone when my parents where within 10 miles of me. That showed disrespect.
