Required viewing from the week in DVDs.

"District 9" was easily the year's best movie with "nine" in its title. See "9" was eye-popping, but forgettable; whereas "Nine" is ... OK, we haven't seen "Nine" (and we don't plan to). "District Nine," however, wherein scantily clad, singing aliens are sequestered in Johannesburg -- that's the movie of the year.

Also in stores this week:

-- The original DVD episode "Something, Something, Something Dark Side" finds the "Family Guy" crew going back to the "Star Wars" well, this time lampooning "The Empire Strikes Back." Do you think it syncs up with "Robot Chicken Star Wars" if you play them both at the same time? Sort of like "Wizard of Oz" and "Dark Side of the Moon"?
-- We don't know a single person who saw Mike Judge's "Extract." For all we know it could be as great as "Office Space" and "Idiocracy." It's times like these that we're thankful for the existence of digital versatile disc technology.
-- How does "American Pie: Book of Love," the straight-to-video seventh installment in the undying franchise, even remotely connect to the theatrical films, at this point? Is it still about Stifler's cousin? And why is Jim's dad hanging out with random high schoolers?
