Brett Smiley is a freelance writer and Asylum's Funfetti correspondent. When I first laid my eyes on a McDonald's holiday pie (yesterday), I fell in love. But it was just a picture. So, with my belly yearning for Funfetti magic, I set out to find where I might locate this wondrous holiday pie.
I started with a grassroots approach. I called 15 McDonald's restaurants in the greater New York City area. "Huh?" they replied. "We have apple pies."
But I didn't want an apple pie; I wanted a caloric-disaster holiday pie, which looked like a combination of a Funfetti cake and a custard doughnut in the shape of a hot pocket.
With hunger as my guide, I called McDonald's customer service line.
A representative told me 85 percent of McDonald's restaurants are
franchises that decide individually whether to stock the holiday pie, so she has no way of locating the rare delicacy.
My quest now took me back to the Internet, where Yelp.com users ridiculed a like-minded pie hunter with cruel and misguided comments like "It looks like a piece of ashy oxidized turd stuffed with baby vomit." I sought guidance on Yahoo! Answers, where users in Mayfield, Ohio; Hardinsburg, Ky.; and Milan, Mich., claimed local McDonald's stocked the pies. I even found a Facebook group that professed its love for the pies.
But still I was denied the pie I craved, or any kind of resource to find them.
I turned next to a blogger named Mr. Inconspicuous, the author of an unflattering review of the pies who has unintentionally become an authority on the mysterious baked good. He pointed me to a greater Washington, D.C., area McDonald's. So I hit the phones again. "Huh?" they asked.
One restaurant in Arlington, Va., used to have them. The employee sensed my desperation. She offered an apple pie.
All signs led me to the sad realization that the holiday pie is a seasonal item, stocked only by a brilliant few franchise owners located mostly in the Midwest and South. But a lucky few of you out there may still be able to capture one of these pies.
If you can locate one, enjoy it first. And then let us know where you found out so we may live vicariously through you.

Thank wtf are you leaving a comment on this article? I can't stand you a holes that make some negative comment about McD's when obviously, millions and millions of Americans (and people worldwide) eat there and love it. Should they eat it every meal of every day? Of course not, but you probably shouldn't drink alcohol every day but plenty of people do. It's called choice and freedom to be who we are. Life is too short to an a hole!

I had one in Kettering, Ohio, near Dayton. That McDonald's did not sell eggnog shakes, so I had to get the holiday pie. It was OK.

We went skiing for the weekend. On our way home from the Poconos on I80, we got hungry and decided to look for food. Unfortunately, I am not sure which exit it was just that it was still in that region, not yet in New jersey. My step-mom & sis enjoyed one. We bought them 2 for 1 on the $1.00 menu. Good luck!

I too have always looked forward to the colder months here in wisconsin, for my love of the pumpkin shakes, punpkin pies, eggnogg shakes and eggnogg pies. Im totally pissed that for the last 3 yrs, i could only get the pumpkin shakes at CERTIAN chains in Milwaukee, West Bend where I live, and Grafton. The eggnogg shakes are also at "SPECIAL" chains and the most loved in my book, THE CUSTARD PIE. My friend worked at a McDs' here in W.B., its a sugar cookie-type crust with pretty rainbow sprinkles and a delectable warm vanilla custard. I cant and havent been able to get the ANYWHERE in the milwaukee, west bend or grafton areas. ALL THREE ARE IN DIFF COUNTIES BUT VERY CLOSE TO EACH OTHER. After MY OWN quest, I feel your pain, Dear Brett, as i cannot find it anywhere and when i ask, i get a puzzled, confused look on the managers' face and told "Uhhhhh we havent had those in a few years" even though the last place i asked had them LAST YEAR. As to those who dont like the look or taste or our " McDs' Xmas Time Custard Pie Quests"....Go to another blog or SHUT YOUR PIE-HOLE!! LOL HEHEHEHE

I also live in Wisconsin, closer to Madison area. You should try Culvers for pumpkin and egg nog shakes, absolutely amazing and they only charge you 20 cents more for a shake than a soda when you buy a meal!!! Am interested to find one of these holiday pies, sounds delicious!!

I have found these pies twice in my life thus far. When I lived in Las Vegas, during the month of December ONLY, they had the holiday pies. There was a McDonalds around the corner from my apartment. It was great. The best part was that on the last day they had them, at 2 in the morning, I went after work, and a girl gave me a whole bag of frozen ones to take home with me to bake myself.
This year, I have found them in my new home town of White Marsh Maryland (a suburb of Baltimore). They had them after the pumpkin pies of November, but ran out about midweek before Christmas.
Unfortunately, they are seasonal, but damn they are good! Baltimore is not too far from New York, so next year, come on down and grab a couple. They're good!

I absolutely love the Holiday Pie...I can tell you this...we had the pie at our store this year but supply was very limited from our distributer...So we no longer haev them but the special pies that we get are usually avail every year around the same time...example pumpkin is avail from like oct to dec...holiday is avail from dec to the begining of jan....we now have cherry again...but have to say this the holiday pie is awesome...As good as the fried apple and fried cherry pies were back in the day...but you probably wont be able to find them anywhere now until next Dec.
good luck and happy hunting

i work at a McDonald's in Illinois that used to carry the holiday pies. i tried one and i have to say that while they don't taste bad, they definitely look (and smell) better than they taste. It wasn't really what you'd expect it to be, and kind've left a funny aftertaste. A bit of a disappointment, since i felt much like the author did when i first saw the pies.

Had one the other day from the McD's in Ontario, NY it was nothing stupendous I would definitely take the pumpkin pie any day. They also had them at one one I go to in Rochester, NY. I haven't been to any other ones in this are so who knows they could be at all of them around here.

The pies may be good in one place and terrible in the other for a reason. Quality isn't consistant in all McDonalds. There's one south of where I live that's always good and the one north is 'count on it' terrible. Everything there is super greasy. I had one cashier refuse to give me my change. She rolled it up in a napkin and put it in her purse. The manager returned it after I reported it. Just a little weird. I, basically, like McDonalds.

I work at McD's, cherry pies were ordfered but none came in,. Each franchise owner does their own thing. Even stores under the same owner are different. We hear all the time that our food tastes better and our store is cleaner. Everyone wants McRibs, but it's only a special.. Think a corp as big as McD's would make it part of the regular menu.. The quarter pounders are huge before being cooked, after, well get out microscope to see it.. All fat.. Also the Big Mac wrap and angus wraps are the newest thing out..

Don't know anything about a holiday pie, but the McD's in Hawaii sells a Haupia pie that's pretty amazing. It's made with the standard pie crust but filled with a gooey coconut filling that mimics the taste of the hawaiian coconut desert.

I worked at a Mcdonalds for 6 years and they had the Holiday pies every year. Each year the Holiday pies were as awful as the year before. No change, just plain nasty!
Mcdonalds does have very good tea and that is about it in my opinion. Burger King is my favorite place to eat.
Hooray for Burger King!

I love them too. I first had them when we lived in Columbia, MO - which has the best run McDonalds in the US. We mived to the DC area (Stafford, VA) where they had them on the menu, but never had them to buy when we would be there. Doesn't suprise me thought, the McDonald's here in south Stafford are poorly run, filthy and seriously lack customer service. Thank goodness we found Five Guys.
