Recently, we posted a video of a young basketball fan allegedly flipping the bird at ESPN cameras. In all honesty, even though we concluded the kid was being cheeky, some of us weren't all that certain what the youngster's intentions actually were. His index finger was partially raised, so he very well could have been flashing a peace sign. You guys couldn't seem to agree either.

Reader Buddy accused of us jumping to conclusions based on context clues (specifically, that the incident happened in the hometown of Rocky Balboa): "You can clearly see the kid is giving the "V" sign for the Villanova team, and you go and say it's the 'bird"... Why? Because it's Philly. ... Unbelievable."

wayne said that the ambiguity was caused by the stadium food the kid was scarfing down: "It is a PEACE sign!!!!!! Look at the food (NACHOS always GOOD) in his hand. He makes the sign FIRST then his hand is twisted slightly. You can STILL see the peace sign, just sideways."

TIMBO countered (with typical Internet commenter restraint) that the "bird" was, in fact, the word: "You people are incredibly stupid. ... If he was showing a peace sign, his hand would have been turned with his palm side facing the camera. ... He was shooting the bird finger plain and simple ..."

Finally, Dale Pappert class of '68 poured over the clip like it was the Zapruder film. He eventually came up with this analysis: "Watched your clip 5 times. No question the kid's being a smart ass. He started out by giving the V for Villanova sign, and quickly tried to be cute by dropping a finger and turning his gesture into an obscene one."

Will we ever know the answer? And, more importantly, is that a sugar cone in his left hand? Or a plain old waffle cone? The ridges would suggest waffle, but we've also encountered the occasional ridged sugar cone. Debate this in the comments and get back to us, please.
