Never underestimate the ingenuity of beer drinkers. Last week, an old man in a North Dakota apartment complex rigged up a home alarm system made of empty beer cans, and it actually worked! Police were initially summoned to the building after a report at 1:24 a.m. of two elderly naked men attacking each other. They weren't naked, although the tenant was in his underwear, having been awoken when an intruder stumbled into his place and tripped his homemade alarm.
"The renter of the apartment had set up a stepstool with empty beer cans on it and set that in front of the door so that if anybody were to open the door it would knock all the beer cans off and that would wake him up, which it did, so I guess it worked," said Sgt. Bill Ahlfeldt of the Fargo Police Department.
"He called it his burglar alarm," Ahlfeldt said. "He said he doesn't really lock his doors, so he does that instead."
The renter got out of bed and turned on the light to find Daniel Gable, 61, who lives one floor below, hiding in a closet. A fight between the two men ensued and Gable was sent to jail on suspicion of robbery, although police said it was possible that his drunken state led him to believe he had entered his own apartment.
Either way, we think this simple beer can-based security system could give ADT a run for its money. What burglar in the world would dare attempt to break into a place with a sign outside reading, "This apartment protected by PBR."

Why doesn't the creep just stay in his own apartment. He should just leave the other man alone. If he can't leave the guy alone why doesn't the creep just move out and find somewhere else to live????? If the landlord wanted he should have the burgular thrown out of the apartment building the creep is a threat to the other people that stay in thier own apartments and leave people alone. The landlord should go to the court and have breaking and entering tennant throw out because the good tennant that stays in his apartment isn't the problem here. While the man is in court ask the judge to have the bad burgular tennant removed from the apartment house. You can't have creeps like that liveing amongst comforming citizens. Its just not right. Uninvited unwanted crooked guests. Very immature, irresponsible creep

When I was in the Army, while on training maneuvers, we rigged up a perimeter security system out of empty soda cans with a few pebbles in them and strung them on trip wire (similar to craft wire or florist's wire). Tied the wire around the trunk of a tree and then hooked the wire to a stake every so many feet. Someone walking around at night would accidentally kick the trip wire and the cans jangled pretty loudly. A lot safer than a flare or artillery simulator and often scared the person just the same.

I lock my doors, I also have 4 dogs and if you saw them you would see why I am not in the least worried, even if I lived in the middle of the worst area. My little one is the alarm, the loudest noise maker ever!! Then she snacks on everything below the knee. Number two, she is older so I have retrained her to just hold on and slow the creep down. The third is also older but can not be trained to do what the other older one does. He wants to kill and I cannot break him of that. The fourth, well he doesn't even need the other three. He is MASSIVE, he is a mix of Pit and Rott and you can just imagine what he looks like. He is amazing in action let me tell you. Now, I wonder how many people are going to respond that these dogs are too dangerous and should not be allowed to live. These dogs are controlled by the voice of three different people. They are not agressive at all, never have they attacked, NOT ONCE. Only when someone tried to break in. They changed their minds halfway thru the room and turned and ran like scardy cats. My dogs followed them to the door and never did they step outside the house. They know their territory, they removed the intruder and they got what was coming to them - a BIG treat. Someday my heart will be broken when the are gone but for right now, when ADT calls to sell me an alarm, I tell them they ought to be selling my dogs' pups, better then any alarm they could install.

Good Job, I'll bet you have alot of good ideas after all your training that can be used in civilian life. Speaking for myself only and taking into account that you may not wish to share memories, even good ones. Perhaps you could share some of the training and ideas that you received that civilians could put into use here to help keep them safe. I know that certain parts of the military teach their members on how to make something they need out of items you never would have thought of as being useful for anything. I think that is just another area where our military men and women, who think that now they are home and so many years have passed they can't do the job they used to because technology has advanced while they were off keeping the world safe. They can teach us how to improve our lives with the little we have being as the recession has hurt us so badly. If we are to think about it, we go without every day the things that we took for granted back when the money was flowing. We complain about not having the money to go out on Friday nights like we used to. What about our Military men and women? They are not complaining about not going out on Friday nights! They can't even see a bar much less plop down on a stool and order a cold one. Boy do we take everything for granted. You mentioned being in the Army but not in the war so I am assuming that you are not an active member at the moment. However whether you are or you are not, Thank you for your service and thank you for the tip on noise makers. I'm sorry I went on and on like that, I just feel that we as a Nation do not do enough or show enough love and support for our troops who put their lives on the line everyday for mine and everyone else.
