Web sites out there are filled with so much junk. The pages give you a migraine when you try reading while simultaneously sorting through messages about toenail fungus, free breast implants and other distracting (but alluring) filler. Arc90, a technology lab, has developed a free design tool that clears away all the crud and lets you read Web articles without ads, video embeds or flashing monkey graphics.
Readability takes less than two seconds to install: It's a plug-in that you can drag and drop right onto your bookmarks toolbar. Once installed, the Web will work normally; but if, say, you want to visit Playboy's site to actually read an article, just click the Readability button on your browser and everything other than text vanishes. You can also customize the appearance of the text, so that the layout will mimic a newspaper or an eBook. And if you're really anal-retentive, you can specify your margin preferences.
