Fortunately, you've finally moved out of Mom and Dad's basement. Unfortunately, though, Mom isn't around to lay out your clothes anymore. A fashion blunder can spell disaster for the single guy looking for a date, or any guy trying to maintain a good image in the workplace. Fashion faux pas can take many forms. Below we've compiled some common pitfalls to avoid, so when they laugh at you, at least it won't be for your clothes.
8. Worrying too much about what your buddies will think
Do you really want to choose your clothes based on the opinions of a bunch of dudes? Women are attracted to risk-takers, and taking some fashion chances will speak to your self confidence. If your buddies give you a hard time now, you can lord it over them when you impress that special someone.
7. Not spending where it counts
Think of your wardrobe budget as a triage situation: Spend first on shoes (not crocs), then watches, then jackets, then shirts, then pants.
6. Wearing a dark dress shirt with a suit
Unless you can pull off black on black, (hint: you can't) this should never be done.
5. Wearing dirty clothes
Women are like Sherlock Holmes when it comes to stains -- they notice that small ketchup blot from a month ago that you think is practically invisible. And they will assume you are unclean with all of the negative associations that entails. Same for bosses and clients.
4. Wearing clothes that are too large
We realize that you may think you're camouflaging a beer belly with that XXL sweatshirt. Regardless of body type, wearing clothes that are a size too large is unflattering.

3. Mistaking expensive clothes for good-looking clothesWearing a T-shirt with GUCCI all over it does not say, "I'm rich." It screams that you're trying too hard and look ridiculous.
2. Trying to be too fashion-forward.
Unless you're a literary agent or rock star, wearing a suit with plaid shorts (or, worse, leather pants) looks ridiculous.
1. Not dressing to the occasion
Work is work, play is play. And anything you wear to the gym is off-limits for either situation.

Black shirt with a black suit looks pretty awesome, whenever I do it I get tons of compliments. But this is a pretty good list overall.
A lot of guys, and even girls, think that wearing baggy clothes is what flatters their body. Usually a more fitted shirt and less baggy pair of jeans will make you look nicer than a baggy shirt and jeans that are so baggy they hide your legs like a dress.

Myabe you are one of the few who can pull it off. Are you in the Mafia? : )
I think the author left out cell phone holsters. The only thing that should be worn in a holster is a 9MM or similar piece of hardware.

This may have been mentioned but wearing white sox with dark suit looks very tacky (as in David Letterman's wardrobe).

I have some issue with #7. Not spending where it counts
Think of your wardrobe budget as a triage situation: Spend first on shoes (not crocs), then watches, then jackets, then shirts, then pants...
I don't think watches are the best place to spend money, and I think a nice shirt, jacket and pants go a long way to cover for buying only $100 shoes... oh and the fact you don't have a $2K watch on.
I have a $200 Nixon (Rotolog) watch and I get more comments and compliments on this watch then I would with a Tag... most people can't tell a nice watch from a Fossil.

I agree with you on #7.
Shoes should be comfortable, not necessarily expensive.
Instead of investing in an expensive watch, you're better off having some of your shirts and pants tailor fit.

i dont nessacarily believe in the shoes just have to be comfortable idea, shoes have to be stylish. if you roll out in sneakers chances are you dont get laid. The whole watch thing, get a pocket watch and confuse everyone, its the best idea. As for the underwear thing, i think its funny that when guys show off their underwear its seen and juvenile but when ladies do its somewhat sexy. oh the way of the world. oh.
and judith, you sound like you like bondage, juss sayin.

Most successful males I see wear watches that make an impression...not a simple small watch, but a bold, larger, statement watch. It's almost like a requirement...no one needs one, but it fits the look.

At work there are wall clocks everywhere, but I feel something is missing if I don't have my wristwatch. My 20 something daughter also always wears a watch.

its funny how jonathan attributes money with success.
wearing a watch like that just makes you look like your trying too hard to get people to notice that you have money.

You need to add the t-shirts with the foil prints on it. Hit in Vegas but else where throw them out. Men and glittery shirts is not pretty also get rid of you ed-hardy shirs caps and tennis shoes so 2008. Yes invest in good dress pants nice dress shirts a good blazer and a suit that fits and you have a wardrobe that will take you every where also get rid of your Teva sandals use those for hiking or walking in the woods not to work or in public yikes

I have to agree with this. I'm thinking Jersy Shores. Man those guys wore a lot of glitter on their shirts. I think they thought they were diamonds.

I hate ties - always have; they give me an urge to yank them up around the guy's neck and see how long it takes him to pass out. Nice fitting pants, jeans, a nice shirt and a blazer or jacket will do it.

Hate the big pants with underwear showing. The crotch around the knee making a dude look like a 3 year old wearing hand-me-downs is NOT sexy!! Go with the well-laundered Levis that FIT, and any shirt will look hot. Listen up, guys.
