If only every time somebody assaulted a cop they were forced to wear a flower-embellished sign rather than being tasered senseless, the world would be a much more entertaining place.Sadly that's not the case, so we'll have to take solace in the public shaming of Alexandra Espinosa-Amaya, who shoved a uniformed, off-duty cop by the face after being kicked out of a club for tying a balloon to her wrist on her birthday.
Officer Brennan had wanted a unique sanction for the woman, who knocked his glasses off his face, and the judge seemingly obliged, sentencing her to two years' probation, anger-management classes, 50 hours of community service, writing a letter of apology and, of course, standing outside the station wearing a sandwich-board-style apology for four hours.
There's still no word on whether or not the Coldplay she was listening to on her iPod while advertising her wrongdoing was part of her punishment.

The first thing I would have made her do is take off those sunglasses and look people in the eye.

It is never ok to shove a police officer BUT was the officer overreacting to the woman tying a balloon to her wrist. I believe there are over zealous officers out there too. Like every professional in America there are good people and there are bad people. Although I do not know the entire story however from what I just read this officer was out of line with the control issue. Come on officer were you threatened by a balloon initially???? she should not have knocked your glasses off or shoved you for any reason but I am inclined to think you were trying to provoke her. I realized officers are here to protect us and I commend them for the job they do but sometimes they are in the wrong too>

bambi slayer,
You're comment is a gross generalization of how you feel about law enforcement. Sure, granted, there are bad cops, which I hate, but on the other side of the coin, there are good cops. Don't let one bad apple ruin it for the rest of them. I don't konw if you have personally ever needed the help of law enforcement, but what if your residence was broken into while you were away? Who would you call to respond if you were in a fender-bender, and to be un-biased about it? Who would you call if there were no police?? The police are out there to serve and protect us. Your taxes pay for law enforcement agencies to be up and running. Without any branch of law enforcement to enforce the laws, we have mayhem. Do you relly want to go back to the way of the wild west at the O.K. Corral?

never met a good cop in my 44 years of living

when kids threw rocks at my house and broke a window, the cops said they couldn't do anything unless they witnessed the kids in action, and even if they did, they could ONLY talk to the parents. No charges, no way. And, the officer told me to not call the cops back out to my neighborhood, because they didn't like coming out here (bad neighborhood).
Same thing when my house was broken into - they couldn't do anything and didn't come out.
Cops have never responded to the neighbor who kept shooting a gun in his yard.
When my truck was struck in an accident and the cops were called, they said they aren't supposed to come out anymore.
When my fathers parked truck was hit at his house by a neighbor, he called the cops, showed them both vehicles with matching paint scrapes, and the cops said they couldn't do anything about it either.
and the list goes on and on... everytime I've actually needed a cop, all they can do is sit on their bums. Face it folks, cops aren't there to protect US.

For all of the 'cop bashers' out there, there are thousands of good cops for every 1 bad one. After 20 yrs as a police dispatcher, I can say I've worked with some of the best, and a few of the worst. But they still put their lives on the line everytime they put that uniform on, as well as when they're not on duty. Basically, they're never 'off-duty'. The bashers that respond to these stories generally sound like whiners, the type of males (I won't call you men) who have problems with authority of any kind. The young lady in this story, birthday or not, should have complied with the rules, removed the balloon which could have been tied to a chair, and everyone would have had a great evening. Instead, she now has a police record and has been totally humiliated. And yes, the sunglasses should have been off so people could see her face. I've seen police officers who have been shot, hit by cars, bashed with bats, etc. I've also seen their families after funerals. Take your bashing to those dives you hang out in, just don't call for help when you and your buddies get so smashed you start beating the crap out of each other.

I agree that a good number of the police are "somewhat" good cops - I really doubt that it would approach 1000 to 1 ratio that you suggest. I thing that a ratio of 15 to 1 might even be high.

I live in a small city on Long Island, NY. We have our own police dept. seperate from the county. I have seen good and bad cops. I think the problem is that, any job that has uniforms, ESPECIALLY police, when a person puts it on, they feel more in charge. Maybe a little more controlling of things. In my community, our town is geographically spliced, spanish here, most blacks here, Irish here, and so on. On a map, it can be drawn where certain groups of people live. And yes, the treatment of people vary from section to section. I have even seen and heard a cop tell someone that held a visitation order in hand on hours of pickup and drop off, when the child was not returned, thats not our problem, you have to go back to court. When asked to please try to find the 5 year old, or at least attempt to contact the father or family members, she was told that she should do that, and that"she is with her father, (a known drug dealer)I doubt he would hurt her". So, yes the police are there to protect and paid to do so. I have also seen them in my community grab drug dealers and thugs off the street so that my kids and others around us, don't have to see their business or be afraid to let our kids outside. But the bottom line is, the uniform in and of itself is a power trip for, I would say HALF of all cops. They can be arrogant, nasty and just plain ignorant to a persons concerns or the actual events that had happened. Then there is the genuine officer that can see a mothers concern or an honest fear and trys to make the situation better. Sorry to say the latter is VERY hard to come by. So, I agree that the woman needed some kind of reprimand, but what did the cop do to deserve what he got and maybe he DID deserve what he got. I wasn't there, but I know enough to give respect to the uniform until the person wearing it, loses that right. All situations have 2 sides.

Not to overstate the obvious but, when a cop is off duty working as a bar bouncer... how is it that he can have someone charged with "Assaulting an Officer"? Does that same protection apply to "RentaCops" everywhere?

Just because they work a bar does not mean they are "rentacops" or are off-duty. Its called working part-time while on duty.

Diffrence is, he WAS a cop, they are sworn to protect and serve on or OFF duty as a police officer. Rent-a-cops are NOT.
