For late, lonely nights we'll often give Hulu a shot. (Come on, there has to be something redeeming about a film called "Cheerleader Ninjas.") And we will occasionally watch something on YouTube -- but it pretty much has to involve a skateboarding bulldog. We often lament the lack of good stuff on our favorite streaming services and, in fact, from time-to-time are known to yell from rooftops, "We'll pay for streaming content!"
Both Hulu and YouTube are answering the call. Starting immediately, YouTube is testing out $3.99 streaming movie rentals, which are available to you for 48 hours after purchase. The only problem: The trial period involves only five movies, all from the most recent Sundance Film Festival. So much for renting "The Big Lebowski."
Hulu is considering another tack: charging for old episodes of TV shows. Now, we can finally catch up on all the back episodes of "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia." The price? $4.99 per month. (We're guessing we'll still be able to watch "Cheerleader Ninjas" for free.)
As these services evolve through their growing pains, our preferred option will remain Netflix's instant streaming. But, if YouTube adds some actually watchable movies, we'll consider switching horses.
