While Warner Brothers has been promising their He-Man remake, '"Grayskull," since 2007, the quirky Hollywood art showroom Gallery 1988 has delivered a completely new vision of Eternia's inhabitants. The exhibit, "Under the Influence: He-Man and the Masters of the Universe," transforms the gallery into Castle Grayskull and features artistic reincarnations of Skeletor, She-Ra, Battle Cat, Stinkor and He-Man never previously imagined.
Curator Jensen Karp collected "Masters of the Universe" (MOTU) pieces from 100 different rising artists, some of whom work at MOTU's parent company Mattell. The toy giant decided to co-sponsor the show after collaborating with Gallery 1988 last year on the Art of Hot Wheels exhibit.
"MOTU, and the characters who populate the world have always been avatars for creativity and expression," said Scott Neitlich, Associate Marketing Manager at Mattel. "The original toys were not meant to have one specific play pattern or story line. We wanted artists to feel free to allow their vision to come out. This gallery exhibit was all about expression, not censorship."

"Cosmo Skeletor" Cosmo Skeletor is a mash-up of Skeletor and the 1972 Burt Reynolds centerfold for Cosmopolitan. Chicago-based artist Johnny Sampson told Asylum, "I wanted to convey the raw sexuality of the toys. They showed a lot of skin to begin with, I just took it to the next level."
"Stinkor, You Are Loved""I connect with Stinkor because I always thought people avoided me," said "Stinkor, You Are Loved" creator Ben Strawn. "Even around all the freakish monsters that made up the series, he was the one that everybody hated to be around."
"Skeletor Gets a Root Canal""I became a super-fan of He-Man by the time I was 2 or 3 years old," said Brooklyn artist Kiersten Essenpreis. "Watching it now brings back a lot of fond memories, along with a newfound hilarity that I never picked up on as a kid."
In case you're wondering, she also told us that Dr. Harris's dentist office is only a 15-minute drive from Castle Grayskull: "Skeletor visits every six months, and has a surprising secret passion for good hygiene."
When asked if she'd done any work featuring She-Ra, Essenpreis said, "I do have that home video performance piece I did back in the '80s of me a She-Ra."
We hope she's not kidding. We want that on YouTube soon.

Have to say it: the illustrator seems to have the Sword of Grayskull envy.
