Nothing pisses us off more than when we see cyclists riding on the sidewalks. They're supposed to follow the same traffic rules as cars and the city also spent gazillions of dollars painting bike lanes! To get bikers off the walkways and back onto the streets, cops have been cracking down and giving out summonses at $100 a pop. Forty-three of 'em were given out in Gramercy and Chelsea during the last month alone.
While we support the new initiative, we did find one part of the story to be a bit dramatic. A spokesperson for Transportation Alternatives, a pro-bicycling group, said: "[Biking on sidewalks is] one of the more dangerous behaviors out there."
Yeah, it's a hazard to p and really freaking annoying. But is it more dangerous than illegal guns or skunk infestations? We think not.

There is absolutely no evidence that bicycling on sidewalks is in the least bit dangerous to anyone... except to bicyclists who cross unnoticed by motorists flying out of parking lots.
Any attempt to marginalize and restrict bicyclists any more than they already are is a cruel, unconstitutional and unusual denial of a person's basic right to self propel on public property. Especially when motorists routinely ignore laws with impunity. Motoring is supposed to be a privilege you earn and keep by obeying laws. You don't need a license to bike... tickets should be ignored, since they can't enforce such laws by license revocation or suspension, which is what they should do to motorists. Why don't they? Everybody is busy making money off motoring: banks, city, corporations, feds, insurance, state, and welfare. So the victims - afraid to use abused streets - are given tickets they don't deserve.
