As tired as we've all gotten of Jack yelling, "Where's Kate?!" over five seasons of "Lost," we're actually looking forward to hearing it again on Feb. 2. That, of course, is the night that the most important show in the history of television returns from a long hiatus to begin burning through its final season.
For those of you who absolutely need a "Lost" fix before then, allow us to point you in the direction of Sonic Weapon Fence, Chicago's foremost (OK, and only) "Lost" fan band.
Just reading about song titles like "Wa-a-a-a-alt!" and "Oh, Jin" made us excited for the new season. It also made us want to meet the geeks behind these and other "Lost"-related novelty tracks.
Much like the Brooklyn-based Previously on Lost, the group was formed by musically inclined "Lost" super-fans -- in this case, Patrick Ehlers, Pete Pfarr and Pete Snyder. But the 20-something Chicagoans, who were inspired in 2008 to give this a try by the "Star Trek"–related punk band The No Kill I, initially ran into a problem: The songs weren't great.
Admitting that to themselves was freeing. Their philosophy became "it doesn't matter the quality, just write it," Ehlers tells Asylum. "[Eventually] we kind of realized we were putting forth our best work."
To our ears, it seems like he's just being modest. Frontman Ehlers sounds like a more manly "Weird Al" Yankovic. Their '90s-style pop-punk hooks are pretty catchy. And all of their lyrics are about "Lost," for Locke's sake! Check out some MP3s here.
With releases including "The Oceanic Six EP" and a self-titled album, it's only natural that Sonic Weapon Fence -- so-named after the protective energy wall found on the show's mysterious island -- would be concerned about how the show's imminent departure from the airwaves will affect the band's longevity. But unlike many fans, Ehlers isn't worried about how J.J. Abrams and company will wrap up the frustratingly addictive series. "You can sit there and complain about not getting answers," he says, "but I say, 'Just enjoy it and defend it later.'"
"Lost" fans in Milwaukee can check out Sonic Weapon Fence live on Feb. 26. The final season will already be four episodes old by then, so show up to hear them riff on all the new plot twists.
