Overview: The origin of the Balloon Boy madness keeps the news coming.
Crime: A University of Northern Colorado drama professor set up a video camera to catch students peeing. The next drama the pervert will find is in a courtroom.
4. PHILADELPHIA
Overview: Philadelphia covers the highest number of accidents among the reporting cities, though none of them explain why the Eagles signed Michael Vick.
Crime: Someone throws a baby from a car. The baby is supposed to be fine, but someday awkwardness will ensue when the baby grows into an adolescent and someone jokes, "You must have been dropped on your head as a baby."
3. MIAMI
Overview: Bad weather is big here, but Miami residents aren't nearly as terrified as Atlantans. Miami uses a more potent formula to frighten its viewers: the English language.
Economic: One Miami station has a secret weapon to terrify its viewers about the economy: alliteration. Here are some of the title graphics for the stories -- "Rough Recovery," "Foreclosure Fallout" and "Sales Scare."
And then the news team promoted their cold weather mobilization strategy, the "4 P's": "Protect people, pets, property, plants." I just don't know if I trust anyone relying on a mnemonic device to protect me in a catastrophic situation.
2. LOS ANGELES
Overview: Government, crime and Bob Barker's whaling expedition dominate the news in L.A.
Health Advisory: "What's the saying? A spoonful of sugar makes the medicine go down ... Tonight a new study says don't use a spoonful at all!" says one reporter. According to the station, spoon sizes have been deceiving people for years. Finally, there's a study exposing the truth.
1. BOSTON
Overview: Boston serves its news cold with a hot plate of crime.
Crime: An 81-year-old man named Max was kidnapped and forced to drive to a bank by the kidnapper, who then robbed the bank. The man is OK, but a reporter remains concerned: "One thing I want to comment on is the recovery of the money. Supposedly there was a $1 bill left in Max's car, but they are unable to find it." It's probably in the same place as those Creedence tapes.
So there it is, folks. Based on local evening news, it's probably not safe to go outside, unless there's a dog around to save you.

I have lived in Boston and if Crime is so covered it is because the reporter will not say we had a shooting here or there. The reporter does a segment on it. Try crime Dallas they just say Murder here bank robbery here and can do 10 crimes in a min, Boston is so much safer than Dallas.

I was watching the Boston news tonight and I say it all the time our focus on depressing news is out of hand in this area.
Luckily with all the pain in strife in this world we have Christ Jesus who-when we accept Him-literally comes into our hearts to comfort us in amazing ways, no doubt. It's true!
It's the only safe way to travel.
You'll never be the same!

Having lived in or near Boston for 57 years - I would say that the crime rate and/or news is not worse or more depressing than other cities - I believe we are just more realistic. New Englanders do not look at life through rosy colored glasses. We're more honest and direct by nature - and don't sugar coat it. It is what it is...and the grass is no greener anywhere else.

mister8116, It must be so unfortunate being you. People like yourself who make such simple-minded comments only shows us all how intellectually challenged you are. No matter your race, you are a disgrace to us all.

They all have the same kind of news readers, who think they are movies stars. Especially the weather people. God help us,do they think they are stars. Rather read the paper.

I don't agree with the Boston "pie slices" at all!
I think that compared to many other cities I visit, and turn on the news in the evening, Boston shows way LESS crime news (except for ch 7, WHDH - ha!), and WAY MORE political news than anyplace else I've been, along with BIG doses of weather and sports (which is what everybody in Boston talks about!).
I'd say crime reporting is well down below those as far as Boston news. And I have to say I really miss Boston news coverage. I live in Phoenix now, and I couldn't believe when I moved out here that NONE of the local channels had a regular State House reporter, like in Boston. And all they talk about in Phx is crime crime crime.
I can only surmise that the writer of this article was ONLY watching WHDH!

As a long time resident of Baltimore, MD. I get tired of being lumped in with our neighbor to the south which is a good forty miles away. Also dixon stole more than $5000.oo worth of gift cards that were intended for needy families for Christmas and spent them on herself and friends.

I was born and raised within the 5 boroughs of NYC for 25 years. Before even going down to the charts, I said to myself watch NYC is in there somewhere. Surprise, suprise it was there. I am just shocked it was in 8th place and not in 2nd or 3rd. Everytime I turn on a NYC channel for news, either someone is murdered, missing, burned down, a school closing etc. The only entertainment I get from a NYC news channel is weather and one person that makes a difference. I don't work in NYC so there is no point of watching traffic. As a matter of fact, I am so glad that I don't have to entertain traffic or mass transit anymore. Everything on a NYC channel someone is crying or carrying on. Oh well. LOLOL

i dont care what this article says.. Boston is awesome!! we are "REAL" down to earth people, know how 2 party, beautiful/classy ladies, we are smart enough 2 have the counrty's best colleges, and lets not 4get bout our sports teams. there is something special about Boston, even some of its crime history. Hollywood is now steppin foot over here too! half the "good" movies out over the years were filmed here.. quite a few this year alone. if ya dont beleive me, look it up!!

2 Things:
A) Media is my profession and I can share with everyone that it's all about ratings. While it is true that one can draw directional conclusions from the headlines, they "sensationalize" everything to get us to watch (just like AOL's home page).
B) The joke about "Miami and English" was funny. Of course, someone took offense. There are too many people looking for opportunities to be offended. If this were s a job, all of America would be employed!

Another Atlantan here. Yes, we are terrified of snow and ice. It IS big news by virtue of being so rare. Still, unlike Miami, it does happen once in a blue moon. When it does,we have no idea how to cope and wind up with things like twenty car pile-ups. On the other hand, tornados are a dime a dozen here. We shrug them off like Floridians ignore hurricanes and Californians fail to notice huge fires. The scariness depends on what you're accustomed to.

I have to question the survey for Boston as well. Can you honestly say the people watching the Boston new reports saw NO reporting of corruption? This is Boston corruption is our bread and butter. True we don't talk a lot about the weather, but why should we. It's winter a cold and snowy time of year.
Does any one have any idea what "Local" means on this chart? Most of the headings are self explanatory, but Local just sits there. What does it mean? Help me out here.

Boston. Ha! NO wonder. It's the clam chowder. This stuff is disgusting and would depress the living daylights out of me, too. This stuff is gross. Clams are not food and they are now chowdah!
Bostonians are disgusting. They would yank anything out of the water and guzzle it down. Shahks. Cahs. You name it. Gross people. Gross "food." Just gross. Yuck.
