A new season of "Top Gear," the BBC car show that ranks high on most gear heads' lists of favorite ways to kill an hour, returns this week to BBC America for its 13th season.

To celebrate the renewed growl of engines and screech of tires, Asylum tracked down Jeremy Clarkson (who co-hosts the show alongside Richard Hammond and James May). Clarkson first hosted "Top Gear" during its original run from 1988 to 2000. When the show was reborn in 2002, the one-time journalist and talk show host turned his love of cars into a career of test driving super-cars, like the Pagani Zonda or the Ariel Atom, and devising ridiculous stunts, like launching cars into space or down a ski jump.

"I write segments for the show with 8-year-olds in mind," Clarkson says, "because it doesn't matter if a man is 16 or 60, he's still 8 years old."

The car that most makes Clarkson smile like an 8-year-old: the Bugatti Veyron. The Veyron boasts an average top speed of 253 mph -- making it the fastest street car in the world. "Veyron is a bit like the Concorde," Clarkson explained. "Impractical. Expensive. Elitist. But it's an amazing human achievement to have designed and built the thing."

After more than a decade hosting the show, Clarkson admits he has no idea what makes the show so popular: "Maybe the viewers like to see men falling down and catching fire. Or they want to see what the new Ferrari looks like. I can't work it out. We're ugly. We have yellow teeth. We can't drive very well. So I'm just glad people tune in every week."
