There was a time, long ago, when the Big Ten actually had 10 teams, and was more than just the slower, goofier version of the SEC. It's because of our reverence for those halcyon (but chilly) days of three-yards-and-a-cloud-of-dust and Bobby Knight throwing things that we've been waiting with baited breath for the announcement of what large, Rust Belt university will soon become the Big Ten's 12th member. Our friends at With Leather are now reporting that rumors that the spot will go to the University of Pittsburgh appear to have merit. It's hard to argue against Pitt's selection -- the geography works, and the Panthers have the pedigree and talent to more than hold their own in football and basketball.
But does this move do it for you? Or were you looking for the struggling power conference to make more of a splash?
| Notre Dame -- for the schadenfreude. | |
|---|---|
| West Virginia -- for the jokes. | |
| Iowa State -- so the state of Iowa can be one. | |
| Pittsburgh -- looks like the winner. | |
| Cincinnati -- maybe then the Bearcats could keep their coaches. |

The University of Chicago was a founding member of the Big Ten Conference and also was home to the first Heisman Trophy winner, Jay Berwanger. They withdrew from the Big 10, because of the conflict between athletics and academics. The school felt that athletics devalued education, and education was the school's purpose
UChicago's middle 50% band of SAT scores for the undergraduate class of 2012 was 1340–1510,and it has a near 100 percent graduation rate for athletes.
I think we need to see more importance put on education and not athletics.
