Brett Smiley, previously Asylum's parkour correspondent, will probably eat too much this weekend. What began as a last-minute road trip to a Super Bowl party in February 2004 has evolved into a full-fledged, weekend-long celebration of all things man. To the few and the proud who attend, the annual celebration is known as "Manfestivus."
Manfestivus's main event is, of course, the Super Bowl. But the real cornerstones of Manfestivus are the participants, a group of 8 friends who unapologetically use the weekend to be men -- that is, to make messes, forget work, eat sloppy food, lose sleep and ridicule one another with the best intentions.
Manfestivus is our way of exercising certain unalienable rights. It's a weekend when we re-energize after a year of getting worn down by the Man.
And after very little consideration, the holiday's Founding Fathers also set forth the four pillars of Manfestivus: Boozing, Gorging, Gambling and Excess. Does it matter that "excess" is somewhat redundant? No. No, it doesn't.

There have been triumphs and tragedies over the course of six Manfestivus celebrations. Not real tragedies, but things that seem significant during a weekend-long indulgence.
Like the time our friend Dave had to cancel at the last minute due to work. Or when the deliveryman forgot to bring the mozzarella sticks on our $140 food order for the game. And the most memorable calamity of all: when, after five solid hours of researching binders filled with proposition bets, the sportsbook closed down its betting on the game before we could record our wagers.
There have definitely been triumphs, though. One year, our buddy John got a little too aggressive with his throws at the craps table and, despite two warnings to keep the dice down, he launched them off the table again and nailed a guy at the other end square between the eyes. Fortunately, it was the hipster who was piling stacks of chips on the Don't Pass line. Serves him right.
Small Manfestivus victories continue to pile up along the way. Booze tends to make any guy's weekend better, gambling does make any guy's weekend better, and every good thing in excess, during Manfestivus, is an even better thing. During Manfestivus, it's even OK to steal a table in a packed restaurant from a young kid celebrating his birthday.
Manfestivus is just our version of Super Bowl bliss. A damn good version, that is. It's the best weekend of every year.
So this year, get yourself to the nearest casino and surround yourself with good company, booze and more food than even Rex Ryan could put down. We invite you to make Manfestivus your own. Whatever you do, just don't bet the Don't Pass line.
