For most people, the idea of keeping rodents as pets is off-putting, if not downright creepy. However, it's possible all these reservations could be put aside if we just embrace the capybara as a household pet. The semi-aquatic rodent native to South America can grow to be around 100 lbs. and about 2 feet tall at the shoulder.

I'm pretty sure this was the premise of an entire season or 2 of the animated series "The Tick" back in the mid-90's. ;-)

As a fan of strange creatures, like the loris, sloth, and tamandua, capivaras have been a favorite of mine. What I want to know is how this woman got one. In the wild, capyvaras are very social creatures, so I hope this one wasn't taken from the wild just to indulge someone's desire to have an unusual pet. Fortunately they aren't endangered.

Based on the article covering the capybara in my copy of Encyclopedia of Mammals, they are being harvested for their meat on a commercial basis in Venezuela. Evidently, they taste pretty good.

Hi, greetings from Venezuela. The capibara is known in my country as the "chigüire" and is the preferred meat during Easter. The reason for this being that Venezuela is a mostly Catholic country and the church forbade eating meat during Lent. Fish was OK. The chiguire is a mammal but spends most of his time in the water so it counts as fish for most people. It think this is just a cop-out but I can attest to the chiguire's meat as being an authentic delicacy. As for being a rodent, so is rabbit and we have no qualms about eating it. Regards.

Capybara's are cute cute cute. But don't forget, Guinea pigs are rodents too !! People love having them as pets, hamsters, gerbils, chinchillas, all rodents. And to the guy worried about it's social nature, so are dogs, and they do just fine with humans.
