Who's looking forward to seeing "Invictus"? We know we are. It's the type of film you can take the girlfriend to because it's partly about Nelson Mandela, but it's mainly about sports.Seeing Morgan Freeman play Nelson will be the crowning achievement in a career that has seen the great man take on roles from Hoke Colburn in "Driving Miss Daisy" to God, and just about every president, colonel, detective, boxing coach and Jim from "Hard Rain" in between.
His Southern drawl and awesome screen presence means that if Morgan Freeman is in a film, you pretty much know it's going to be awesome.
Keep reading for eight of the best Freeman film quotes, what we've learned from them, and how we can apply them to our everyday lives.
Film: "The Shawshank Redemption"Character: Red
Role: Warm-hearted badass con serving life for murder / Narrator
Line: "I have no idea to this day what those two Italian ladies were singing about. Truth is, I don't want to know. Some things are best left unsaid. I'd like to think they were singing about something so beautiful, it can't be expressed in words."
What we learned: Sometimes it's best just to shut up and enjoy the moment.
Apply when: Your team just won the Super Bowl! You're going ballistic, but aren't they just 11 men on a patch of grass? Isn't football just an arbitrary game? When it comes down to it, we're all just shadows and dust -- eventually everyone will die and no one will remember this. Whoa! Chill out, Gary Nihilism -- you just won the Super Bowl!
Film: "Seven"Character: Detective William Somerset
Role: Badass cop due to retire soon.
Line: "People don't want a hero. They want to eat cheeseburgers, play the lotto and watch television."
What we learned: A rare misanthropic quote from the great man reminding us that the world isn't a perfect place and that, actually, large portions of the general public are fat, lazy crap-sacks and wouldn't lift a finger to help you.
Apply when: Shoplifting.
Film: "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves"Character: Azeem
Role: Badass Islamic warrior on a Crusades exchange program.
Quote: "No man controls my destiny ... especially not one who attacks downwind and stinks of garlic."
What we learned: Well, like, that no one but us controls our destiny. And don't trust a Frenchman?
Apply when: You're feeling a bit down about your current situation. Just remember what old Azeem said: Pull yourself up and sort your life out. And when in doubt, battle the French?
Film: "Unforgiven"Character: Ned
Role: Retired badass cowboy-turned-farmer.
Quote: Ned Logan: "I sure do miss my bed."
Will Munny: "You said that last night."
Ned Logan: "No, last night I said I missed my wife. Tonight I just miss my goddamn bed."
What we learned: Beds with women in are good, but a bed alone is good enough.
Apply when: Every time you crawl into your tiny, womanless bed, be thankful -- because some people don't have beds at all.
Film: "Deep Impact"Character: President Beck
Role: Badass president
Quote: "Cities fall, but they are rebuilt. Heroes die, but they are remembered."
What we learned: Well, first we learned that "Deep Impact" isn't one of Morgan's finer moments. Second, we learned that if a comet hits the Earth and, you know, ruins everything, we can rebuild it all eventually. We mean, like, not the cool old stuff, like the Parthenon -- that'd be gone for good -- but, like, the McDonald's.
Apply when: A comet hits the Earth.
Film: "Evan Almighty"Character: God
Role: Badass God.
Quote: "Let me ask you something. If someone prays for patience, you think God gives them patience? Or does he give them the opportunity to be patient? If someone prayed for the family to be closer, do you think God zaps them with warm, fuzzy feelings, or does he give them opportunities to love each other?"
What we learned: It's up to you to take the opportunities life presents you. Deep or what?
Apply when: Well, obviously, when life presents you with an opportunity. If you want that career in musical theater then dammit -- dance, boy! Dance!
Film: "The Dark Knight"Character: Lucius Fox
Role: Resident Wayne Enterprise Technology badass
Quote: "Let me get this straight: You think that your client, one of the wealthiest, most powerful men in the world, is secretly a vigilante who spends his nights beating criminals to a pulp with his bare hands. And your plan is to blackmail this person? Good luck."
What we learned: Don't try to blackmail Batman.
Apply when: Thinking about blackmailing Batman.
Film: "Invictus"Character: Nelson Mandela
Role: Badass president of South Africa
Quote: Brenda Mazibuko: "You're risking your political capital. You're risking your future as our leader."
Nelson Mandela: "The day I am afraid to do that is the day I am no longer fit to lead."
What we learned: Sometimes you've got to risk it all to unite a nation. (Though that might just be the film's tagline.)
Apply when: You need to unite people. Half your buds want to go to a restaurant, half want to go to a club -- stand tall, risk it all, and suggest ... "How about a bar?"

I'll throw this Freemanism out there: from Bonfire of the Vanities, character is bad ass Judge White: "Let me tell you what justice is. Justice is the law. And the law is man's feeble attempt to set down the principles of decency. Decency! And decency is not a deal, it isn't an angle, or a contract, or a hustle! Decency... decency is what your grandmother taught you. It's in your bones! Now you go home. Go home and be decent people. Be decent." Lesson learned: be decent. Applicable during a hit and run.
