Nick Waters went where very few men have gone before when he decided to watch a string of "chick flicks" in hopes of better understanding the opposite sex.But then he took it a step further, deciding to document the whole experience on a blog, entitled 30 Chick Flicks in 30 Days: One Guy's Exploration of Romance Through Movies Loved by Women.
Waters, 28, is a regular guy living in a small town in southern Oklahoma who has been married for seven years to his wife, Nicci.
"Nicci and I were watching a chick flick last July, on her birthday," says Waters, "and I turned to her and asked, 'Wouldn't it be cool to watch 30 chick flicks in 30 days?'"
Nicci was thrilled by the idea, and before he could second-guess himself, the idea was sprung. "I brainstormed with some trusted people and had them help me build a Web site," he says.
Waters had rules for the selection of movie titles and how each movie would be viewed and reviewed.
"Once the Web site went up, I only needed people to suggest movies to watch," says Waters. "I didn't have any real requirements for the movies The only requirement was that the films be from 2007 to the present. I left it up to everyone else to decide for me what they thought a chick flick is."
Waters whittled the list of eligible titles down to 30 and on Jan. 15, 2010, beginning with "Waitress," he watched one of the chick flicks each day with Nicci. That was part of the deal, says Waters, "So if I had questions or wanted to discuss things I saw, I not only had a woman's perspective, but I had my wife's perspective."
Some of the other titles included "Mamma Mia!," "Nights in Rodanthe," "27 Dresses," "Sex and the City," "Leap Year" and "Made of Honor." At least for some of the viewings, Waters had company. "We had watch parties for several of the films," says Waters. "It varied from one to two people, and for some we had up to 20 people, mixed gender."It's hard to envy Waters for what he must have endured. ("Nights in Rodanthe"!) And we suspect that most guys won't be quick to follow his lead, although Waters encourages others to take the 30 Chick Flicks Challenge. But Waters says everyone has been supportive, "even the macho guys who said there's no way they'd do it."
The challenge wrapped up on Saturday, Feb. 13, when Waters and Nicci watched "He's Just Not That Into You."
So what does a man say after getting bludgeoned with romantic comedies, tearful embraces and estrogen? "Love is tender," says Waters, summing up what he took from the 30 films. "And any real relationship is based on forgiveness, compassion and vulnerability."
Waters tells us that people have suggested a corresponding challenge for Nicci. After what Waters just went through, we suggest that she begin watching action flicks with him, beginning tomorrow, starting with "Blade Runner."

What he learned was NOT how "chicks" think and act; what he learned was how movie producers and directors think how they're supposed to think and act. Reality is a whole 'nuther story.

Honestly, I don't think my boyfriend would ever do this! An really it's silly sort of, but not dumb or homo, just silly. I studied film in college and I love all types. My favorite films range from Gladiator, High School Musical 3, Braveheart, Pride & Predjudice, Amores Perros, Saving Private Ryan, Bra Boys, and Titanic...I love all types of movies and my boyfriend has never had to beg me to watch a "guy movie". I don't even know why we label movies as "chick flicks" and such they're just FILMS! They are for entertainment and imagination, to tell a story and take you away from reality. Although my boyfriend won't watch "chick Flicks" as people call them (including him) I don't get upset about it, it's his loss an anyone elses that turn movies away because they label them. It's just a movie and if you don't want to watch the ones you label then don't, although I'm sure if you did an gave them a chance, this goes for "guy movies" and "chick flicks" you'd find you may actually like them. Girls need to get over the Graphic thing with "Guy movies" and guys need to get over that whole "Chick flick" thing it's just dumb to me. Wow I wrote way too much Lol! I'm so lame :) have a good day everyone!

I think a real dis-service has been done in only seeing movies made in the last three years. You have to reach back a bit further to really get some great "chick flicks" Casablanca,
A Room With a View, Out of Africa. And what about the darker side of the "chick flick" genre, Fatal Attraction, War of the Roses, etc...
I think you saw the Razzie list of movies, just bad movies in general.

This guy must be nuts. Any male who could watch 30 chick flicks in 30 days clearly has a screw missing. Only thing worse than this would be listening to Dr. Laura for 30 days. I'd rather shoot myself.

And how many manly-man movies did she watch to "learn" how to please/understand him. What a sissy-boy he is. Hell if he didn't know how to treat a lady then he should have never gotten married. Books and movies are for schmucks who believe hollyweird can solve all their woo's. What a sucker. I bet by the time everyone of his "buddies" see this girly-girl man he will wish he had never been born.

I think that any guy that would go to that much effort to try to understand women in general shows something very very real and amazing. I have known people that were so wonderful that they would do anything to understand those that they love, and would take great efforts to express it. This guy has a huge heart and a great attitude, and that's all women usually want anyway is to be understood and happy.

This article would have been a lot more interesting if it had included a list of all thirty movies that he watched.

I think it was a cool idea. If more men and women took the time to learn each other's perspectives and longings, there'd be less adversarial relationships and more partnerships. I'm all for them both doing a 30guyflick challenge now to see what they learn about men from that.

Experience has taught me that "Chick Flick" is probably a misnomer. There are only "good" movies and "bad" movies. The common thread of "chick flicks" is that they tend to be character studies, but character studies can be plotted in any type of movie. Twelve Angry Men comes to mind. Certainly not thought of as a "chick flick" but definately a character study.

How about Dick Flicks and those Male Ballet Movies (martial arts movies)? Male fantasies about flying through the air while shooting people? Is there any reason this silliness is somehow considered on a higher level than movies about human relationships?
