Nick Waters went where very few men have gone before when he decided to watch a string of "chick flicks" in hopes of better understanding the opposite sex.But then he took it a step further, deciding to document the whole experience on a blog, entitled 30 Chick Flicks in 30 Days: One Guy's Exploration of Romance Through Movies Loved by Women.
Waters, 28, is a regular guy living in a small town in southern Oklahoma who has been married for seven years to his wife, Nicci.
"Nicci and I were watching a chick flick last July, on her birthday," says Waters, "and I turned to her and asked, 'Wouldn't it be cool to watch 30 chick flicks in 30 days?'"
Nicci was thrilled by the idea, and before he could second-guess himself, the idea was sprung. "I brainstormed with some trusted people and had them help me build a Web site," he says.
Waters had rules for the selection of movie titles and how each movie would be viewed and reviewed.
"Once the Web site went up, I only needed people to suggest movies to watch," says Waters. "I didn't have any real requirements for the movies The only requirement was that the films be from 2007 to the present. I left it up to everyone else to decide for me what they thought a chick flick is."
Waters whittled the list of eligible titles down to 30 and on Jan. 15, 2010, beginning with "Waitress," he watched one of the chick flicks each day with Nicci. That was part of the deal, says Waters, "So if I had questions or wanted to discuss things I saw, I not only had a woman's perspective, but I had my wife's perspective."
Some of the other titles included "Mamma Mia!," "Nights in Rodanthe," "27 Dresses," "Sex and the City," "Leap Year" and "Made of Honor." At least for some of the viewings, Waters had company. "We had watch parties for several of the films," says Waters. "It varied from one to two people, and for some we had up to 20 people, mixed gender."It's hard to envy Waters for what he must have endured. ("Nights in Rodanthe"!) And we suspect that most guys won't be quick to follow his lead, although Waters encourages others to take the 30 Chick Flicks Challenge. But Waters says everyone has been supportive, "even the macho guys who said there's no way they'd do it."
The challenge wrapped up on Saturday, Feb. 13, when Waters and Nicci watched "He's Just Not That Into You."
So what does a man say after getting bludgeoned with romantic comedies, tearful embraces and estrogen? "Love is tender," says Waters, summing up what he took from the 30 films. "And any real relationship is based on forgiveness, compassion and vulnerability."
Waters tells us that people have suggested a corresponding challenge for Nicci. After what Waters just went through, we suggest that she begin watching action flicks with him, beginning tomorrow, starting with "Blade Runner."

Whoa there children, kiddies, little ones, with all DUE respect, your coming off like a bunch of juvenile judgmental whining baby's. Always ready with the negativity rather than the positive. There is nothing wrong with a guy who attempts to figure out his women, why Heck that's been going on since Adam and Eve. IF,as he stated, it benefited him in that he understand 'love is tender, or LOVE ME TENDER, Elvis hit from mid last century, then good for him. One does what one can. Right away you give yourselves away, your a mix of teens who've yet to experience life or a bunch of developmentaly challenged adults. It's 2010, I've lived this long life and know married life is a challenge, she challenges me every single day, usually late at night actually.. HaHaaaa~~~~

I think if you watch a chic flick with your wife or girlfriend and it gets her or both of you into a romantic mood then in was worth "enduring" lol

Let's see, this guy is actually doing something to better understand relationships, specifically his relationship with his wife. Having her there to discuss what she interpreted and may or may not agree with, and most comments here consider that a bad thing? Consider him to be "bludgeoned", a "homo", regardless of the fact that he chose (

While it is true that chick flix are generally fiction and there is usually a happy ending, a lot can be learned about relationships from them. Most importantly, communication is key!!!!

I amazes me that people will take the time to read an article regarding 30 Chick Flicks in 30 days, then take the time to write such pathetic comments. This guys sexuality is certainly not defined by the type of movie he decides to watch. All those that referenced his sexuality remember it is a mirror image. It is your sexuality in question not his. The article was a great depiction of real life situations. Good Job...

anyone dumb enough to think that a bunch of movies made by men for women will give insight into the female psyche deserves to sit through 45 hours of BS

Why are they acting like 30 Chick Flicks in 30 Days is a hard thing to do? That's 1 movie a day... that's not that hard. And there are plenty of good "chick flicks"-- My Best Friend's Wedding, What Women Want, The Holiday, Return to Me, Someone Like You... so it's not like he had to suffer that bad. This guy just wanted some attention, so he came up with this stupid idea. Congrats dude, you got your 15 seconds of fame.

I agree with some of these comments about watching a chick flick is not going to make you understand women more, movies are fake, you learn from life.Hey,but he and his wife had fun doing it,it brung them closer together.whats wrong with that? Why do men think watching a chick flick is so bad,it just a movie.People are to uptight,it's no big deal.

I loved the idea but he really limited himself when he chose only movies beginning in 2007. Frankly, I'm middle-aged housewife and I've never even heard of those movies (except for Sex in the City and that's only because there was a TV show of the same name). Pity he didn't choose to watch REAL "chick flicks" like Steel Magnolias, While you were Sleeping, Pride and Prejudice or Sweet Home Alabama. In other words, REAL chick flicks. BTW, to BLADE RUNNER I say, BRING IT ON, BABY! Director's cut. Yay! Real women like Action Movies, too.

Well, the idea's good, but if he was going to watch 30 chick flicks, perhaps he should have stuck to GOOD chick flicks. Some of the ones mentioned actually suck. I could've given him a list of 30 movies that are actually worth watching. "Mama Mia"? Seriously? "Made of Honor"? Gag me.

1) The word "endure" in the title of this article......implies negativity. There is nothing wrong with any of these films or for that matter a "guy" watching or liking them
2) A Straight man could do himself a favor and befriend some gay men. THEY know how to have a GREAT relationship with women.....once STRAIGHT men learn this...just add the sex in and both him and his (girlfriend/wife) will be happy

His efforts are indeed laudable, but they would have been lost on me. I may be a woman, but I just don't like "chick flicks". Most of them portray either women who have absolutely no luck in men or women who are hoping for Prince Charming to come rescue them. Sorry, but that's not my thing. Now where do I find a guy that will sit through a Harry Potter marathon with me...?

While I appreciate the noble effort I can't help but feel a bit patronized. No one has mentioned that women have to deal with boy-flicks 365 days a year. Has anyone considered that the reason "chick flicks" are even a category is that all the other flicks are by men, for men? Women are expected to pretend to be interested in a steady diet of movies about men blowing up vehicles and buildings, or men stalking scantily clad women who act like they want to me murdered, or, coming of age stories about boys trying to get laid. The rare movie that involves a woman coming of age is rapidly dismissed as a "chick flick" and is somehow silly. I find that it is a very rare movie made by and for men that has any substance or heart although they often have plenty of testosterone and macho posturing. Am I the only one who is bored with this?
