Whittimore's will stipulated a sign reading "Smoking Killed Me" be placed in the window of his hearse. His request was honored, and this public service announcement from the other side drove through his hometown of Kent.

Most people make that decision at the age of 11 or 12. That's about the average age of a first-time smoker. After that, most people are hooked and can't quit. (Some do, but I've known ex-drug users who said it was harder to quit cigarettes than to quit cocaine or heroin.) Do you really think kids at that age are capable of making an informed decision? The tobacco companies know full well that the vast majority of their customers got hooked in childhood. Not just adolescence...childhood. Think about that.

damn you lived to be 85 you could of died from something else like cancer, painful colon cancer, or kidney cancer. This old man was lucky to live this long. I would have a sign more like Lucky bastard, smoked for 68 years. I hope the rest of us smokers are that lucky.

Oh how easy it is for you people who have absolutely no sin to put down and judge others. Maybe you should apply for the job of God?

liz left a comment that he lived to be 85 , how ignorant can Liz be, Did she not see that his golden years were ruined by Emphyzema which means LIZ he spent his golden years on oxygen gasping for Air unable to relax due to LUNGs being destroyed by years of smoking, it is a slow long term horrible way to go, Why is it that liz is so ignorant,

smoker? It isn't about judgement, it's about choice. Smokers choose death. I am an ex smoker so I know all about the addiction and how incredibly hard it is to quit, but it can be done!

Your comment is half correct! Yes, it was a lack of will power to become and keep smoking, but you are still at risk for emphysema without ever picking up a cigarette. Just by having second hand smoke or working in an environment with air pollutants can cause this dreadful disease. I commend you for stopping and being "better" than this man, but you already did damage to your lungs and you are still at risk to get this disease. Remember that when you condemn someone for trying help others to think about what they are doing to their bodies.

Obviously, you had a "habit" and not an addiction. I sincerely hope you never understand the difference.

Tobacco companies sell a deadly product, while doing all in their power to downplay the dangers. (For instance, I suspect there's a grassroots campaign to spread false rumors of tests where they find absolutely no harm to health from smoking.) At the same time, they portray it as 'cool', and advertise to the youngest audience they can get away with. I still remember a certain cartoon camel that had people pissed. They get you hooked before you can learn better, and nicotine is highly addictive to most people. There's also some word that additives in some cigarettes make them even more addictive.
In short, these companies do their absolute best to trick people into getting hooked on their drugs, and it's the sad truth that not everyone has the luck to have resistance to this stuff, and the sheer willpower to break away from an addiction. How about you try a little human compassion, and not condemn people for being human?

It's ironic that everyone is so intent about blaming big tobacco. Let's take responsibility people. Where do you think I got my first smoke, sure as hell Mr. Reynolds to come over in his limo to share a stick. Matter of fact, who made it look cool? Sure wasn't that gay assed cowboy. Oh yeah, got my first smoke same way I got my first beer, my first girlie mag, and my first car. There comes a time when no matter who influenced you, you have to be responsible. I hear people whine about addiction, get over yourself. Addiction sucks, sometimes so does life. Maybe if people would just grow up and do what they have to. Addiction can be beaten, but you won't do it whining like a baby. Try asking some of those guys at A/A (all my respect to those people). It is hard and most of the whiners don't want to put in the effort.
