Whittimore's will stipulated a sign reading "Smoking Killed Me" be placed in the window of his hearse. His request was honored, and this public service announcement from the other side drove through his hometown of Kent.

I feel bad for this guy. Smoking can be and is very addictive. 85 seems like an old age for a smoker but his finanl decade was anything but pleasent. The trick to not dieing from smoking is to never start. The will power a person needs to have is in the very beinging and to never start. As a non-smoker I probably don't have the right to say that but I've watched many of my relatives and friends come to a sad end with countless doctor apts. and drugs to keep them alive while they smoked. Some even tried to stop smoking but failied many times. I understand the chmeical changes that take place in the brain because of smoking. This guy with his death and sign has a very important message for everyone.

Yes quitting is that simple. You just quit. I did it and I know many others who have. There have been warningings on cigarettes since the 60's. If people choose to smoke they can't say that they were not informed.

Smoking didn't kill this nitwit, he committed suicide by tobacco. No big tobacco company tied him down and stuffed cigarettes in his mouth.
This is nothing more than another government controlled propaganda piece to control the populace.
I smoked for 38 years. When I decide to quit, I quit. Simple as that! No gum, no patches, no hypnosis, no replacement. I just did it!

As a caregiver, I would love to take my family members who smoke to work with me. One lady, 47 years of age, lies in bed with oxygen. She has had several nodes removed and the surgeries have left her to where it is too painful to get up. She cannot urinate or have a catheter, so when she has to go, I have to cup my gloved hand around her private area to direct her urine into the bed pan. To be confined to bed at her age, just waiting for death is sobering. Does she have regrets? Yeah, she does. Then there is the 75 year old client who can't get up to take a crap. I roll him around and change his diapers as e gasps for air. He says, "help me" but there is nothing more that I can do. It is a painful, humiliating way to die and they know with all certainty this was their choice.

Well I gave up smoking 8 yrs. ago. It was very easy to do. After I gave it up now if I can only stop eating that would be wonderful.

LOL How convient to name smoking as a killer of an 85 year old. That age , in itself , contributed to his death . The ignorance of some people to think they can live forever, is beyond reason. My Grandpa, a full blooded American indian, was 108 when he died and he smoked from the time he was 6, LOL . Stupidity rules America, we can tell by by who bought the CIC position.

The man was 85 years old, and died from old age like we all are going to do if we make it that long. My grandfather lived to be 90 years old and the man smoked a pipe filled with that twisted tobacco, and gee was it ever strong. My Father died at the age of 67 of lung cancer and had never smoked a cigarette in his life, smoking is not good for you anyone knows that, neither is being in debt, drinking diet sodas and all the likes, but just because someone has a pack of cigarettes in his pocket, means that is what will kill him. Surely this mans family won't file a lawsuit against the tobacco company wouldn't surprise me at all, and him 85 years old. Now that would be a joke.

I know everyone is right in their words about smoking but the biggest killer no one talks about in the Gov.. Alcohol is the biggest killer. The Gov. took over Al Capone & doesn't do anything about the alcohol because to many people like to get high & be stupid in the Gov.. Of course they don't care about anyones death caused by drunk drivers untill it happens in their family. Then it's to late.

I actually agree with you; smoking is for the weak-minded and incompetent. Smokers are smelly walking ash-trays, that are the equivelent of a piece of trash. If they had any form of intelligence they'd see its bad for them and they'd make an attempt to stop. Cigarette companies should just all shut down and this hideous act should be banned. And for all those who read this and might get "offended", guess what, I don't care!

How sad. Both my parents died of lung cancer, even tho my mom had quit years before. My gram & uncle, emphysema too.
My mom was convinced that the makers started adding something to make cigarettes more lethal & addicting, & that's why the old timers didn't die until they were way in their 80s or 90s, & now people are dying in the 50s & 60s.
You younger people really need to quit, this stuff is killing all the people we love, don't let yourself be one who goes way before your time because of this killer.

Geeze, I guess I'm destined to hell. I smoke AND I'm overweight. Worked hard and paid taxes all my life, now disabled from my wonderful employer that expected me to work like a pack mule for almost 20 years ruining my back. They laid me off to avoid a workman's comp claim, what great guys. It's funny how the gov't pushes the whole Anti- smoking thing, but they'll sure tax the hell out of them when you buy them.If everyone quit tommorow how would they replace all that money they're taking in?
Ya know, I smoke, I love smoking, I have for 35 years, my Mom smoked till the day she died...from melanoma, not lung cancer.I don't drink, have never used drugs and I don't judge others about thier habits, to each thier own. There are so many other things that kill people besides smoking.

If the government really did care they would just out right ban cig. You're right they need the money and in the end it is a choice. Just remember that if you ever do face an early end due to some kind of terminal illness from smoking, that it was a choice and a choice you would most likely regret.

Hey, my grandad smoked and lived to be 96! Don't just blame the cigarettes! What about choice! Right, those evil tobacco companies shoved that smoke in your mouth! Too bad he didn't get a liberated jury, and he could have left $millions to his lawyer and to his estate! We'll be suing the Sun next, that evil sun is causing lots of skin cancer! Too bad that people who have sensitive skin don't limit themselves and their choice to the Sun's deadly rays!
