In the world of appletinis and peach bellinis, The Meat Lover's Bloody Mary served at Tantulm restaurant in Long Beach, Calif., seems a bit out of place."Building cocktails for women is simple – they want light and fruity with a certain amount of sophistication," mixologist Jack Kerrigan confessed. "Most men aren't comfortable sitting there holding a martini glass."
That's why Kerrigan created The Meat Lovers' Special, comprised of Bloody Mary seasoning, Sriracha Hot Chili Sauce, tomato nectar and Absolut Peppar plus a half-ounce of beef jus and a garnish of blue cheese–stuffed olives, bacon and beef jerky (teriyaki-flavored, in case you're wondering.)
"I was thinking of names for drinks and for some reason 'Meat Lover's Special' popped into my mind. It seemed like the most absurd cocktail I could think of," Kerrigan says.
"We go through beef jerky like you wouldn't believe," general manager Melina DeAnda admits. "It's the only drink people call about to make sure it's still on the menu."
Served in a pint glass, the Meat Lover's Special will be one of two featured cocktails at an upcoming wedding in the restaurant; it's the groom's drink choice. The bride's drink choice? An Asian pear martini.
DeAnda guesses Tantalum sells about 15 a day, "and 10 to 12 are going to men."
Kerrigan, who is also developed a tobacco-infused vodka so people don't have to go outside to smoke, adds, "Any girl who's going to order and drink a Meat Lover's Special, she's the girl to go out with on a Saturday night."
