Although his global fan base begs to differ, Christiaan Van Vuuren insists that he isn't sick in the sense of being "sick" (that is, awesome). No, this tuberculosis-stricken Aussie with a keen ability to rap is sick in the sense of actually being in poor health.Or, so he claims in a recent viral rap video -- a video which, by the way, he recorded in a hospital room while a hole in his lung was mending.
You see, Van Vuuren, known now as the "Fully Sick Rapper," was admitted to a Melbourne hospital in December after a trip to South America. Life in quarantine began one day while he began coughing at work.
"I covered my mouth and I could feel that the cough was a bit wet," he told Asylum. "I looked at my hand and it was just covered in blood. I was like, 'F**k! This isn't right.'"
No, Christiaan, that does not sound right at all.
Read on to learn more about Van Vuuren's struggle with tuberculosis and to see two of his music videos.
"By this stage, all sorts of things were running through my head," continues Van Vuuren. "The only time I've seen someone coughing blood is in a movie or in some action flick where Bruce Willis is taking a bullet to the kidneys."
Long story short, he was admitted to the hospital, spent nearly a month in quarantine, and was released with a clean bill of health. A few weeks later, however, with plenty of DVDs, instruments and a cooler full of snacks, Van Vuuren was re-admitted. Turns out the tuberculosis was a rare, drug-resistant form that continued manifesting in his body.
With his re-admittance in January, Van Vuuren has spent 80 days in quarantine. That means limited outside contact, rare visits outdoors and lots of medication. To alleviate boredom, he began making music videos. "I started rapping about how I'm not sick in the sense of being sick, but I'm sick in the sense of being sick sick," he explains. "I sent it to a few mates and they were pissing themselves laughing."
Once posted on YouTube, his audience grew far beyond his expectations. Now, the Fully Sick Rapper has a total of six videos, including "Life in Quarantine," which was featured on CollegeHumor and has over 300,000 views on YouTube.
Even the hospital staff seems to be amused by the videos.
"There's been a couple of times when the doors burst open and I've had my undies on my head or some medical equipment strapped to me that I shouldn't have strapped to me," he explains. "They're really cool now because I've been here for so long that I'm sort of becoming part of the furniture."
Van Vuuren will release more Web videos while in quarantine and even after he rejoins the real world. And, the way things are going, that could be sooner than later.
"I'm going to have such an appreciation for normal sh** when I get out," Van Vuuren tells Asylum. "Just a walk in the park or just to have my feet in the sand or in the ocean is going to be so unreal."
Asylum wishes you the best of luck, Christiaan. We want you to appreciate as much normal sh** as possible.
