The majority of Americans think God intervenes in day-to-day life.Combining the results of two recent surveys on religious belief, sociology professor Scott Shieman calculated that 82 percent of Americans ask God for help and guidance in making decisions; 71 percent believe that when good or bad things happen to them it is all part of God's plan.
Another 61 percent say God has predetermined the course of their life, and 32 percent take that a step further by agreeing with the statement "There is no sense in planning a lot because ultimately my fate is in God's hands."
According to the findings, better educated and wealthier Americans are less likely to believe God plays an active role in their life.
If that many people are whining to God about their problems, we can honestly say we feel for the big fella.

No blasphemy intended, but holy shit!
First, a couple of caveats: I was a solid atheist for years, and now I believe quietly and firmly in God.
Now, watching you, Cassandra, and you, Chris, is like watching two friends of mine argue over who has the best football team. The spite, the name-calling, and the refusal to entertain the other's point of view is eerily familiar here.
I suggest you two have a few things in common.
For one, you both are firmly convinced that you are right. Period. End of story.
Secondly, there is literally no way either of you will change the other's mind. Not going to happen, regardless of the impeccableness of your logic and arguments.
Third, both of you make valid points. It is true that people have used religion to commit atrocities that would churn your gut. It is also true that some religious people have contributed greatly to mankind.
I think what we all need to acknowledge is this: your right to belief does not negate my right not to believe. It should never be mandatory for anyone to participate in any religion. Religion has no place in our schools or public policy, simply because of the potential for corruption it seems to engender. (See Catholicism)
However, people should be free to choose their spiritual path, provided they aren't harming anyone or forcing their dogma down somebody's throat. (I include missionaries, because that's really their job)
If we could learn to be tolerant, and actually educate ourselves about others rather than relying on our prejudices, it would be much easier to live in peace.

And about the article, can someone explain to me how anyone can believe that God has a plan for everyone, given that this means that a)children die every day, b)this would mean that we have no control over our own lives, and c)Hitler and other mass murderers were sent here to do God's will ?

Cassandra's comments use the same typical flawed reasoning of most theists. Here's a question for you: Every now and then you hear some story on the news about how a mother killed her children because "God told her to." If you place validity in people's firsthand accounts about their religious experiences then would you agree that god IS telling random mothers to kill their children?
What about the Sept. 11th hijackers? They were extremely devout theists who killed themselves in dramatic fashion for their god. Doubtlessly, they had some kind of "other-worldly" experience. Would you agree that god spoke to them and told them to do it?
And before you bring it up, Hitler was not an atheist, he was roman-catholic. He says so in Mein Kampf. Stalin was an atheist, but you'd have a difficult time proving he did what he did BECAUSE of his atheism.
Simply because people CLAIM to experience things does not mean they truly did. The brain is an incredible thing and all sorts of experiences can be explained away by increases or decreases of various chemicals. Just because someone says "I heard the voice of God" doesn't give validity to that claim, it simply means (at best) they heard a voice in their head.
Yes, many people who contributed to the field of science, art, etc have been theists. However, advances in science have only been made when those people refused to use their faith in their research. Science allows no room for faith, and functions entirely on physical evidence to back it up. Newton believed in god. But he also believed in alchemy and all sorts of other occult experiences. But no one cares now, because his faith didn't help our understanding of the world. His reasoning did.
Btw, I think its important to point out that this article is slightly disingenuous. Saying "most people believe in god" isn't very specific. It throws all the Christians (protestants, catholics, lutherans, baptists, etc. many of whom hold explicitly different beliefs from one another), Muslims, Jews, Urantians, and all other theists into one category. How many of those religions have fought vicious wars against each other based on theology?
How many of those religions claim to be the "absolute truth" and "revealed word of the One True God?" How many of them really are? How many claim that the others are deceived? It doesn't take a rocket scientist to say "Hm, maybe they are all deceived."

"Simply because people CLAIM to experience things does not mean they truly did."
Like some people claim to know there is no god but truly can't.
You claim that the insanity of mankind proves there is no god. It only proves, in my opinion, that we should thank god that people aren't gods.

What age group is this supposed to be? I feel like, out of the people in my age group (18-30), only probably half believe in God at all.

Beside me... the song of faith

Through each trial and tribulation
Through each inconsistent known
You are with me Lord where ever I have gone
Through each tunnel filled with dire vermin
Through each fiery room of hell
You are with me Lord to give me strength and skill
Through each tormented hour of my life
Through each blessed minute found
You are with me Lord taking in my firm belief
Through each wage of sin I'm paying
Through each promise I have made
You are with me Lord to be my living wage
Through wicked hours lonely wander
Through storms that have tried men 's souls
You are my destiny, you are my goal

wow all i have to say is this world is so creepingly evil its obvious that its impossable 70% belives in god. but i may be wrong, it also seems as tho the ones who go to church every sunday and go on and on about god can be some of the most evil nasty people ever..kinda like a sheep in wolfs clothing.i dont belive in telling people what to belive i feel it goes against what i feel god is about. and i feel god has a diffrent message for everyone,, so what i feel god wants me to know.. may not be what god wants you to know..you may recive a diffrent message then me i wish i think everyone should be aware of god but stop arguing about whos right or wrong about gods message

Wow! Some peoples comments sure makes me glad we ALL will have to answer unto God on an individual basis... My God! May God bless those who do not know Him in the pardons of their own sins. God blesses us All but He really looks over and after fools and children...

GOD is High and Mighty! HE is ALMIGHTY! And above all... He has the very last say and ALL Power is in His hands... you'll catch that later... some sooner than later...
You don't have to feel for HIM... HE felt for us...

Fight for the word Saints! There is but ONE (1) perfect and is where some are confused.
Just because one goes to church and are in church still does not make him perfect. Flesh cannot be perfect. Period.
To eachest own...

My, what wonderful writers and ideas. No God or god or gods.
That is obvious. The god thing is a node in the brain about the same as the ones that give us joy from using drugs. I know; I have experienced the euphoria that results from being struck by "god." Fortunately, I outlived that experience. The only decent belief is Buddhism but not any organized form of Buddhism.
Supposedly, Buddha said "This can not be taught." You have to find your way by decency.
