Ordering off-menu items at a hip local joint is a great way to look cool. It says, I'm a regular here, I'm in on a sexy secret, and dammit, the kitchen staff loves me. But what about doing it at national chains? After reading Coupon Sherpa's 24 Secret Restaurant Menus Revealed, I decided I needed to try some of these so-called secret selections. It was the experience of a lifetime. Sort of.
I started off at that Mecca of fast food, McDonald's. In the most casual voice I could muster, I ordered a Land, Sea and Air Burger.
Of course, the cashier had no one idea what I was talking about. When I explained to her I wanted a hamburger, chicken patty and Filet-O-Fish all on one bun, her eyes went wide and she ran to get a manager. That's when things got really impressive.
The manager asked if I wanted my chicken crispy or fried (duh, crispy), what kind of bun I wanted (I let them decide), and if I wanted anything else on it (cheese, ketchup and tartar sauce, because I'm fat like that).
Then, in hushed tones, she explained to the cashier how they were gonna ring up this monstrosity, and ... that was pretty much it. A few minutes later a young woman handed me a bag, looked at me cockeyed and said, "You about to eat that?"
Read on for more off-menu misadventures.
Next up was Burger King, where I planned to order a Veggie Whopper until I saw that the BK Veggie Burger from Morningstar Farms was in fact a very real menu item and this seemed to defeat the purpose of my exercise. Instead, I got nostalgic and went with the Rodeo Cheeseburger, a burger topped with barbecue sauce and onion rings that I enjoyed as a kid. Wikipedia claims it was rolled out to coincide with the release of the 1998 flick "Small Soldiers," though I could've sworn it was tied to Will Smith's 1999 turdfest "Wild Wild West." I prefer to remember it that way.
Anyhow, the Rodeo burger was nowhere to be seen on the menu, but I felt a pang of disappointment when I ordered it and the cashier handed me a receipt without flinching.
It may be off the menu, but it's still very much in their system. It tasted fine; I guess I was just hoping for more pomp and circumstance. After all, wasn't I being ridiculous?
After a disappointing return trip to Mickey's (All I'll say about their "grilled cheese" is not to order it; it made me sad), I began to feel I'd struck out. I needed to go big again. I needed to order something absurd. So I went to KFC and ordered poutine, a mess of a dish from Quebec consisting of fries, gravy and cheese curds. Considering KFC is neither French nor Canadian, there seemed no good reason they would ever offer such a thing; it was so batty it just might work.
Through an inch of bulletproof glass, I said proudly, "I'll have an order of poutine!" To which the employee replied, "We got what's up there," and pointed to the menu. I got a small Pepsi, hung my head, and plodded away, like Charlie Brown, but fatter.
Ultimately, off-menu items at fast food chains are like the deleted scenes on a DVD. They're kind of interesting to see, but it's obvious why they were left out of the movie: They suck.
You may be wondering, though, what about that Land, Sea and Air? I admit, it was an experience. Those fine, accommodating folks at Mickey's even threw on an extra burger patty just for fun. After staring at it with a mix of trepidation and glee, I opened wide (really wide) and went for it.
It was absolutely the filthiest piece of crap I've ever eaten, and I mean that in the worst possible way. That said, it's a great way to impress your friends -- if you're a college freshman who's desperate for acceptance.

Hey, I worked for McD's for 9 years as a manager and they made that grilled cheese WRONG... you might have actually liked if it had been done right, but I'm guessing they don't have the equipment any more. They used to turn the bun insides out, put the cheese in [and a tomato if you're a very good boy] and toast it by putting it in the Big Mac bun toaster and holding the handle so it doesn't squish. We ate them when we got bored with everything else... but we made up other stuff that was worse.

All the places except Chick-fil-a serves nothing but hawgswill. Only drunks eat at those places as most normal Americans wouldn't want any FN thing from there.
BUT if it's 2:30 in the morning and your hungry, try Seven Eleven's nachos with chili and cheese and sqirt it on thick! I know, more Hawg Swill but good and messy none the less

I don't know which Burger King you went to, but every BK in Michigan I've hit up has had the Rodeo Cheeseburger clearly listed on their dollar menu. I used to think they'd gotten rid of it, but I'm not so sure they ever had. Just look more closely.
Also, if you like that, try the burger at Rally's which is basically the same thing as the Rodeo, but bigger, and with bacon.
Yes, bacon. ON the menu.

Too bad the "air" part of the Land/Air/Sea is really not from the "air." Those chickens can hardly walk around b4 they are slaughtered, let alone fly. Don't eat McDonald's.

Brendan, you must've meant "crispy or grilled," since crispy and fried are the same. The LS&A looks horrible, if you don't mind my saying!

There's the Taco Bell "Enchirito"
It's been off the menu for a decade or so, but most locations will make you one and know what you're talking about when you ask for one. It's a bean burrito covered with enchillada sauce and a bit of shredded cheese.

I guess the Land, Sea and Air Burger changes depending on where you get it. We always built it: normal hamburger bun bottom, cheese, Filet of Fish patty, McChicken Patty, dime patty w/onion, cheese, ketchup/mustard on the normal hamburger bun top. Don't remember needing to put tartar sauce on it, but I'm sure we would if asked.

instead of asking for a triple cheeseburger at McDonalds , say you want a "BIG AND CHEESY" - it was a 6 month promotion a bunch of years back . its not on the menu anymore but most of the managers still know about them . in my area , when i worked at mcd's i use to make people "BIG AND FISHY" sandwiches . that was like my signature sandwich that i would make = its a triple fillet-o-fish with a slice of cheese between each fish patty & extra tarter sauce , it was huge & you would not want to pay for it - it was around $10 at that time . "CARNIVORES FOR LIFE TO YOU VEGGIE EATING HIPPIES" that is what we are get use to it .

Years ago I used to manage a Church's Fried Chicken store that was next to a Burger King.
My favorite thing to order at BK was a Whopper-with-cheese-minus-the-meat. Best cheese sandwich in town! They could never figure out how to charge for it and always wound up deducting more than half the cost. And you could get a rainbow milkshake just for asking. (Have it your way!)
So, needless to say, my Church's Chicken/Burger King years (with Krispy Kreme across the street) helped me add about 25 lbs...!
