If you've watched even five minutes of TV lately, you've probably seen the commercials featuring "Flo the Progressive Girl," the insurance company's perky spokesperson. While the ads might have some diving for the remote, we like that Flo is a throwback to the days of friendly commercial mascots like the Maytag repairman. (Her retro-geek chic style brings back fond memories of Burger King's "Herb the Nerd.")
We spoke to actress Stephanie Courtney about how she came to portray Flo, her own new-found fame, and which bespectacled spokesperson she finds "crushable."
A regular on the Los Angeles improv scene where she's a member of the Groundlings theater, Stephanie appeared on the first season of "Mad Men," ("I'm sort of living in the '50s and '60s a little bit," the actress says) and starred in the hilarious Bob Odenkirk–directed film "Melvin Goes to Dinner."
She also turned up on the short-lived Geico "Cavemen" sitcom (but we won't hold that against her).
Stephanie tells us that Flo was created to be a sort of "friendly waitress" face for the Progressive brand. Her background in improv comedy helped her nail the perky, friendly vibe the company was looking for. As for the look, the ad agency wanted a "retro-futuristic 'Jetsons' sort of thing" that helped Stephanie perfect the character. "Once you're in that makeup and outfit, you're sort of there," she says.
While Flo has quite the online fanbase, Stephanie enjoys her anonymity. The actress says she only gets recognized "maybe once a month or so," adding that it's "always when I'm in no makeup, hair in a ponytail, chasing after my nephew. That's when someone will be like 'Aren't you ...'"
We've often wondered about the white, gleaming world Flo exists in. Where is this magical land where insurance comes in cardboard boxes? And could it actually be in the same world as the Mac and PC guys? Think about crossover potential. "We could all play poker together in the break room," Stephanie laughed. What does she think about Flo and PC having a little flirtation? "Both [Mac and PC] are extremely crushable." Did someone say spin-off?
Flo fans will want to look for Stephanie in an upcoming episode of "Sons of Tucson" and in new Progressive ads coming soon. She'll also be appearing in the movie "Fred," playing the "awful mother of a bully." But it's her weekly show at the Groundlings theater that keeps the real-life Flo, well, grounded. "Whatever happens in this crazy business, I get to go there and play with my friends onstage."

Yes, she can be annoying, but even if you don't like the commercials you will remember them...isn't THAT what the ads are for?
What about the Maytag repairman? The Geico gecko? Or the grandma who kept complaining "Where's the beef?"

What's to h-a-t-e about the character? Nothing. Way to much meanies in our world. Stop it. Grow up. As for Stephanie, she is a (very lovely/pretty) WORKING actress, reading the script (we should all be sooooo fortunate!) No doubt everyone would enjoy her paychecks these days. Anyway, I think the commercials are fine & dandy. There are a lot worse. Turn to another channel when TV ads become unbareable. Your choice instead of complaining.

I think the Flo concept is great for selling something as dry as insurance. She adds a quirky, fun aspect to the commercial series. I'd buy a DVD of all of them, I like them so much, although some of them are on YouTube as well as a video of her improv act as herself, Stephanie.
I also find her character quite attractive.
The agency who came up with this campaign did a great job.

That perky, friendly, girl next door persona she projects so well....I could easily see her playing Sarah Palin. That is, if Palin ever stops playing herself. I don't know which you see more of these days...Flo or Sarah.

I can't imagine anyone not liking these commercials. I look forward to them. I am always looking forward to a new one. She does such a wonderful job. She was just made for these commercials. Keep it up, because I enjoy watching all the old ones over and over. My favorite one is when she talks about the motorcycle. Thank you for providing us with these enjoyable commercials.

When will progressive use her to pitch the Automotive X-Prize that they are sponsoring? Did anyone know about Progressive sponsoring that event? It starts in April.

I also hate insurance companies, they are a bunch of lying theives. The worst part is we have to buy insurance only to have to pay lawyers to fight for coverage.

By your worst nightmare...
Flooding the public mainstream with advertising from a "certain" company is really bad for everyone. Not only are they playing the game of mental reinforcement via repetition, which has been proven marketing ploy in the past, hence the government cracking down on subliminal advertising and becoming outlawed, this form of advertising will soon be also, now they just FLOOD. Don't forget who is paying for that advertising you bunch of robots! Keep supporting, play that corporate game and be OWNED! No common sense people. Down with Corporate America! Time for the real Americans to stand up and say that this is wrong!

She's cute, but what's with the hair? And she's not the only one. I wouldn't expect to get a job at McDonald's with such stringy hair, much less a job on TV. Yet I see this unwashed, uncombed look everywhere on TV and in movies. Is this the 21st century version of bra-burning: A rebellion against neatness? Is it appealing to men? I find it greatly distracts me from the point of the commercial. Yikes - Buy a hairbrush!
