Readers share their true stories of terrible tattoos. I had just broken up with my fiance of five years, and I was feeling a bit out of sorts. I decided to go to meet some girlfriends at the neighborhood bar for a few games of pool and some drinks.
Everything was going fine until a few gentlemen came over to the table in an attempt to meet our group of girls.
One of the men was exceptionally good-looking. We played a few games of pool, and he told me he had just gone through training to be a tattoo artist. He also presented this challenge: If I won the next game, he would give me a free tattoo.
I had never gotten one before, but after having a few drinks, I was impaired enough to agree to the terms. He was a great pool player, and I knew I was going to lose anyway. But guess what -- he sank the eight ball! I had made a promise and my friends were also being very persuasive. I had to follow through.
The group of us went to the tattoo parlor and the handsome gentleman started on my tattoo. I told him that I wanted a rose on my ankle, but I didn't choose any pictures. He said that he could do that easily and I believed him. During the process I laughed and joked with my friends, paying little attention to what he was doing. About 10 minutes into the process I decided to look down.
Instead of seeing the beginnings of a tattooed rose, I was startled by a spiderweb and half of a spider. I wanted to scream but it was way too late to change anything. I had to sit there and let him finish. At the time, it didn't seem to look that bad. But when I woke up in the morning, I could see that I made a terrible tattoo mistake.
I rarely wear sandals in public now, and I always have to worry about covering the awful "art." When people do get a glimpse of it, I get teased terribly. But the worst reaction I got was from my mother, who now reminds me of the tattoo every time she sees me.
You should never be impaired or even remotely emotionally distressed before deciding to get a tattoo. Some other tips: Always go to a reputable tattoo parlor; first choose a picture, and then have the artist to sketch it out on your selected area; and most important, choose a tattoo artist because he has experience -- not for his physical attributes.
Got a terrible tattoo tale? Send it our way.

We have a tatoo parlor here that gives free drinks to ladies on Friday nights. I bet they sell a lot of tatoos late in the evening.

What a stupid comment about convicts, hookers, etc. I know doctors, lawyers and teachers who have tattoos!!!! It's 2010, not 1960. Sounds like someone needs to get out more!

prstnldr- my family contradicts your statement, in full. My oldest sister is a lawyer and has a tattoo on her foot. My other sister is a teacher has three tattoos, one on her foot, one on her hip and the other on her wrist. I myself am an anesthesiologist, and guess what? I have a tattoo on my hip. You should really think about what you say before you generalize a topic.

And this merits space here why??? I'm positive she's not the only person who regrets getting a tattoo.

I call BS on this story. Either the person wanted the spider and changed her mind after or is stupid beyond belief for trusting some dude in a bar to give her a tattoo. If somebody was truly that ashamed of a tattoo, she would at least have the sense to pay to have it removed or at least invest in that makeup Katt Von Dee sells until she could get it removed. I know it's common for people to say they got drunk and got a tattoo or piercing, but if a person really wants to get one sober, then they at least research where they go and talk to people who used the parlor before going there.

everybody makes it sound like tattoos are a bad thing. they aren't!!! tattoos are a personal private thing. when i got my tattoo, i got it for me, not for anybody else. it was something i wanted. as time went on, i realized what i had gotten (a butterfly on my hip) was more than just ink on skin. it reminds me, and some of my other family members about my late grandmother, and now my mother who has fallen very ill. that gave my tattoo a very important purpose. like i said, i dont show my tattoo to many people, or wear low riding jeans to advertise my ink. i got it for ME. and as for that rediculous crack by that moron who thinks that tattoos only belong on hookers and criminals, should realize that i am a nursing student, i work in a healthcare setting while not in school, and nobody has a problem with the tattoo. my boyfriend, also works in the same healthcare setting i do, and will be graduating from medical school next year and has a tattoo on his arm to commemorate his life's journey into medicine. finally, my cousin, who is gradating from law school this year will be getting her first tattoo to remember the victims of Virginia Tech. She was a student there and was in the building the day of the shootings, and lost a very good friend that day. none of our tattoos are bad, they all have meaning, and we are no less professional than anyone around us because of them. now, back to that comment, i am highly offended that you made such a remark. i dont remember the name on the comment, but it starts with a p. i guarantee that you are no better off than anyone who has a tattoo. as a matter of fact, you are probably one of the most close-minded people ive seen comment on these stories. please take the time to realize that by your tattoo predjudice, you are probably missing out on some really nice people. remember, you cant judge a book by its cover, and you cannot spot lowlives from a distance based on something they put on their skin.

Donna and Doona,
Neither of you have ever made a mistake before? I'm impressed! However calling someone an idiot for a mistake is rude.

I have 8 tattoos. I have a college degree. My husband has 12 tattoos, and a nipple ring. Nobody would ever point at me, walking down the street and say, "Look at the tattooed freak!" I put a lot of thought into the placement of my tattoos, and every one of them is special to me. They all symbolize a certain point in my life, and when I look at them I can remember exactly how I felt, why I wanted it...even the music that was playing while I got the tat. Not all of them are small...not all are big. My parents hate them, so I don't make them look at my tattoos...it's all very simple. In my family, my generation isn't the first generation to get tattoos...just the first to be heavily tattooed. And we're proud! There are no drunk daddys, no baby momma drama going on here...just normal, working people who have families and go to church and the PTA...and the tattoo parlor. It's wrong to judge someone based on some preconcieved notion of 'white trash'. I am a member of the Junior League, after all...

The "artist" should have finished by telling Her, "Welcome to the world of skanks".

If you don't like somone's tattoo, look the other way! I got mine in 1971...long before they became fashionable! Intrestingly, it's "behind" me now, and I can't even see it!! It has been the "butt" of a few good laughs with ladies I've met since then...and a few Doctors too, come to think of it!
If you take a minute to talk to the person about their tattoo, there is almost always an interesing story! Don't be quick to judge, just take it for what it is...it's only a tattoo!

Well done tattoos are awesome! They look especially great on women. I got my first one almost 25 years ago, no regrets! Do not get one when you're drunk or on a dare! Dumb move!! Find a reputible shop, do NOT design your own, no matter how cool you think it looks, I assure you, it's stupid. Don't let your "buddy" or "buddy's friend" do it for $20. You get what you pay for!!

I had my "buddy's buddy" do my recent tat a couple weeks ago and it's awesome! He's in the beginning stages of learning and has a natural talent, so having a buddy do it isn't always bad. I'd say his work is better than the shop I had my last tattoo done at.

That sucks about the bad tat, but lesson learned. As others have suggested, go to a real artist and discuss some cover up options.

I have seen some beautiful tatoos. But I have seen some that are the worst in the world. I agree NEVER GET A TATOO WHEN DRUNK In fact don't do anything when drunk but have someone take you home and go to bed and sleep it off. Save a lot of problems for other people and you quit making a donkey out of your self.

I happen to be in one of the top five elementary education programs in the country, have taught many students, will teach many, many more, and have six tattoos. Nor am I the only one that has tattoos. My PhD-holding, teaching pro. friends all have tattoos as well (I am among the LEAST tattooed). Having a tat doesn't make you a sailor, a low-life, a hooker. It makes you someone who loves a piece of art well enough to make a life long commitment to it, and adorn yourself in something beautiful, permanently. Just make sure you think it through first!

tats are definitely not for me... In my humble opinion, tats are trashy and ultimately very embarassing to the owner... But hey, it's your body

first off is that even an ankle?
and look at the skin, its horrible, dont think this women was any prize to begin with! she evens sounds like a tramp.
but theres many distatsteful tatoos, but if you dont like it look the other way, the person who has it on THEIR body likes it.
i have no tatoos, but am pierced and can only be seen by people i want to see them. many tatoos are in awesome taste and have a ton of meaning to their displayer! the one who paid for it!
we dont hear the people covered in tats complaining about what a goofy drss you wear or such corny shoes or ugly jewelry, nope, they just carry on their way and enjoy their life.
i also have friends who are covered from the neck down in tats and it looks awesome, he had it done by reputable artist, and further more i dont think artists are trained, youre either an artist or you dont have the ability.
true tat artist have been drawing for years.
people open up your minds its the 2000s! yes i think the way some people dress or wear their hair is weird, but i just dont do it that way i be my own person. times are changing people, either enjoy it or fight it but you cant change it.
