Surely, there are points to make on either side of the health-care reform debate, but when President Obama signed the bill into law, right-wing political pundits brought a whole new meaning to the phrase "jumping the shark." Apparently, according to some,

I'm a little ashamed to admit that it took me a full minute to realize you were saying "Sin Tax" and not "syntax".
That's what happens when you spend your entire weekend working on grammar and linguistics homework.

I can see where they are coming from, everyone is allowed to have a thought and I see it. I go to a tanning salon and I never see a non-white coming in or out of one. But just wait and see, this isn't the last tax to come from this health care bill!!! We will all be broke soon!

Sadly, Greg Gutfeld may have a point about it being racist. I mean, of all the tax hikes the President could've made he somehow had Tanning Salons on his radar??? Explain that one to me. And when those pundits say it's mostly white people that use them, specifically it's white women so there's potential there to be racist AND sexist. Clearly this was not thought out well.

it raised taxes on many things considered unhealthy. tanning beds are unhealthy and cause skin cancer. not only is tanning unhealthy, it is self hate. learn to love the skin you were born in.

Are you really that stupid and ignorant? You're the reason why the whole world hates america

He went after things that were considered unhealthy, he also banned flavored cigarettes including clove cigarettes and black and milds which are primarily consumed by the black community. Skin Cancer is the one of the most common kinds of cancer in the United States, and each year 1 million people will be diagnosed with it. The malignant melanoma kind is responsible for 50,000 deaths every year and it can kill people in as little 6 months. One of the biggest contributers in the world to skin cancer deaths is TANNING SALONS. It's not Obama going after white people, Obama is going after CANCER. It's the second leading cause of death in this country, and of cancer deaths skin cancer is one of the most prevalent.

Though to play devil's advocate here, this does pass all of the tests used to declare something as "racist". This tax does disproportionately effect the Caucasian race. It's the same way they measure if a college discriminates against certain races, they simply look at the number of students of each race enrolled, and if those numbers don't reflect what they feel is appropriate, then the school is labeled as "discriminatory." The same standard could be applied here, as ridiculous as it is. Really, if you think this discussion is absurd (and it probably is), think about the fallout if a tax was proposed that disproportionately effected the African-American population. We all know it would be labeled as a "racist" tax, and instead of making fun of the people making the claim (which is the appropriate reaction) we would be taking them seriously.

Sunbeds cause cancer. It's hardly Obama's fault they're not a risk to people with dark skin.
As an Australia this just blows my mind. Does EVERYTHING have to turn into a racial matter in America? It's kind of absurd to me that anyone is even having this conversation at all.

Tanning beds cause skin cancer idiot. The tax will help to pay for all of those who will need treatment in the future. The bill doesn't tax sunlight, go sit outside and get skin cancer. America loves to pay for idiocracy. Why do all white people complain about healthcare, unemployment, etc.. etc.. yet you all take full advantage of the very programs you swear to hate. That's racism, Barack Obama has done everything in his power to put America back in front. You racist white people have done nothing but be disrespectful, ungreatful, hypocritical pigs. When bush was running up the national debt to 11 trillion dollars where was the tea party? When he lied and sent our troops to Iraq to get his croonies oil money, where were you? Suddenly when we have a President whom is well educated, hard working and truly dedicated to seeing all Americans live their dreams he's a socialist (likes that a bad thing). Remember the great way of life that all white people enjoyed in the 50's and 60's was funding by taxing the rich 90%. White people, especially in this country, have kept minorities, women, and gays under their feet. We have been dehumanized to the point that we don't want better for ourselves and if we do it's often at the cost of our very essence or souls, producing spinless coon 'tom' slaves like Mike Steele and Clarence Thomas. Just remember when your company ships your job off to some foreign land, or downsizes so the boss can buy a new Lambo and you or your child fall ill, how much you hate that healthcare bill. Remeber when you go to retire and collect Social Security and sign up for Medicaid how much you hate Entitlement programs. But you won't you'll sit at home enjoying all your benefits while writing hateful blogs about a black man, who happens to be our President. Peace be with all of you hateful white people, God knows we need all of you to want peace so the rest of us can finally have some.

I presume that your name is George!!!
My name is Ian, and I live in Sarasota, Fl.
Your article is well thought out, and I agree totally with your
"devil's advocate" presentation.
I would hope that the President, and those who advise him on such crucial matters, (including Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi), realize that they have picked our pockets without permission, and with a cynical smile declared that America has won the victory, after all those months of wheeling and dealing, mortgaged our children and grandchildren's future with a debt that we cannot pay.
I long for the American way of life that has served us well in the past, and that it may return, very soon I hope, to see the "Glory that once was America". Sorry I am running out of space, I would mention to you kindly, that the spelling of effect and effective, should begin with an "a". My best wishes to you, and keep up the good work! Hope to chat with you sometime. Ian.

I'd be much more inclined to listen with interest to your commentary if you weren't trying to sell it with your facial expressions. I do have to say that you're not quite as bad as Stone Phillips and the rest of the Dateline ilk who look like they're doing an impression of an epileptic Katherine Hepburn having an orgasm, but you're dangerously close.
Try presenting your arguments instead of talking at people and you'll increase your presentation credibility.
As far as the tax itself, does any group but Caucasians actually use tanning booths? Given the amount of revenue it's going to raise it does seem to be the equivalent of pissing in the ocean to raise the sea level doesn't it?

Found this great article in the Daily Beast entitled Scary New GOP Poll written by John Avlon an independant who wrote the book Wingnuts.
To anyone who thinks the end of health-care vote means a return to civility, wake up.
Obama Derangement Syndrome - pathological hatred of the President posing as patrotism - has infected the Republican Party. Here's new data to prove it:
67 percent of Republicans (and 40 percent overall) believe Obama is a socialist.
57 percent of Republicans (32 percent overall) believe that Obama is a Muslim.
45 percent of Republicans (25 percent overall) agree with the birthers in their belief that Obama was "not born in the United States and is not eligigble to be President".
38 percent of Republicans (20 percent overall) say that Obama is "doing many of the things that Hitler did".
Scariest of all, 24 percent of Republicans (14 percent overall)say that Obama "may be the Antichrist".
These numbers all come from a brand new Harris Poll, inspired in part by Avlon's new book Wingnuts. It demonstrates the cost of the campaign of fear and hate that has been pumped up in the service of hyper-partisanship over the last 15 months. We are playing with dynamite by demonizing our president and deviding the United States in the process. What might be good for ratings is bad for the country. The Poll, which surveyed 2,230 people right at the height of the health care reform debate, also clearly shows that education is a barrier to extremism. Respondents without a college education are vastly more likely to believe such claims, while Americans with college degrees are less easily duped. It's a reminder of what the 19th-century educator Horace Mann once too-loftily said, "Ignorance breeds monsters to fill up the vacancies of the soul that are unoccupied by the verities of knowledge."
The full results of the poll, which will be released in greater detail tomorrow, are even more frightning: including news that high percentages of Republicans - and Americans overall - belive thatPresident Obama is a "racist," "anti-american" "wants the terrorist to win" and "wants to turn over the Sovereiggnity of the United States to a one-world government." The "Hatriot" blief that Obama is a "Domestic enemy" as set forth in the constitution is also widely held - a sign of trouble yet to come. It's te same claim made by Marine Lance Corporal Kody Brittingham in his letter of intent to assassinate President Obama.
This poll is the latest and most detailed evidence of the extent to which wingnuts are hijacking our politics. It should be a wakeup call to all Americans and a collective reminder, as we move past health-care reform, that we need to stand up to extremism.

I couldn't agree more! It's ridiculous how much Republicans have lied to their people and the people foolishly inhale their crap! They just take their word for it. Obviously, most Republicans don't even know what socialism is! If thy did, they would've known that Obama isn't a socialist nor his reforms! My ex-pastor, who drove away most of his members with his Republican crap, tossed the word "socialist" in every sentence. I know he doesn't even know what the word means! Yet, all of them are hooked-lined-sunken with this Republican garbage! They don't realize it's just a political ploy! Imagine a whole party of idiots! And the political leaders, knowing this, use the people's stupidity and ignorance to their advantage! It's so sad!
By the way, I'm not a Democrat. In fact, I disagree with both political parties! We shouldn't put ourselves in a box. The truly best man or woman should win. These "boxes" are destroying this nation!

Its amazing that people who claim to know what's best for America have such assinine and insane notions against Obama. Wingnuts they are indeed. Also, considering they believe their twisted sentiments against Obama by engaging in defamation of character against him, how can these fanatics explain why Obama was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, a prize that has a history of being awarded to individuals who are non wavering and consistent in the conduct of their beliefs and actions for the benefit of society as a whole.
