Scientists are conducting a series of tests on an Indian man who claims he has not had anything to eat or drink for the past 70 years
82-year-old Prahlad Jani insists he is sustained by the "elixir" of a goddess and does not need food or drink to survive.
Jani says that since he left home at the age of 7, he has wandered the Rajasthan area of India as a holy man. Regarded as a "breatharian" by some -- and a "village fraud" by others -- his claims are currently being put to the test by India's Defense Research Development Organization.
Doctors there hope that, if telling the truth, Jani could hold the key to helping disaster victims survive in areas without access to food and water.
So far he has spent six days under observation without food or water and amazingly doctors say his body is not yet showing the signs of hunger or dehydration they would have expected.
"If his claims are verified, it will be a breakthrough in medical science," said Dr. G Ilavazhagan.
Doctors will continue studying him for 15 days, by which time they would expect to see muscle deterioration, dehydration, fatigue and even organ failure -- or him popping out to the vending machine when he thinks no one is looking.
