In some ways, it's weird to us that Ewan McGregor isn't a bigger star. He's A-list handsome, a better-than-average actor and -- from his breakout performance as a charismatic smackhead in the mid-'90s Brit-indie sensation "Trainspotting" to his star-making turn in Baz Luhrmann's high-camp musical smash "Moulin Rouge" -- he's never been afraid to take risks in search of a juicy role.Still, maybe the Scottish actor is happy on the B+-list. He's been able to rake in a ton of money being overshadowed by CGI aliens in the "Star Wars" prequels and spend his spare time taking epic charity motorbike journeys around the globe with buddy Charley Boorman. He's turned down Bond-level riches and megastardom, despite the fact he'd clearly make a great 007.
And, when he does decide to do leading man duty, he clearly values the chance to run around with Scarlett Johansson, clad in a skin-tight lycra jumpsuit, over such mundane concerns as a coherent script or a believable plot.
McGregor's willingness to stray from the beaten path of the Hollywood heartthrob is in evidence again in his latest role -- playing the titular boyfriend of Jim Carrey's con artist in acclaimed new comedy-drama "I Love You Phillip Morris." (Despite a successful Sundance showing and rave reviews in Europe, the film was abruptly put back on the shelf prior to its scheduled release this week, apparently due to marketing problems).
Ah well, until the film does see the light of day, we'll just concentrate on getting our hands on some of McGregor's appropriately couldn't-give-a-damn, badass rock 'n roll biker threads. Check it ...
I.AM Clothing Leather Zip Jacket
The key with a leather jacket is looking more Marlon Brando in "The Wild One" and less small-time Jersey gangster. McGregor's slim-fit, scuffed-up biker jacket hits the mark perfectly. This nifty zip number from I.AM Clothing should do the same for you. ($575 from FarFetch.com)
Black Leather Round Boots
Pairing dapper threads with rough-and-ready, work-boot-style footwear is very "in" right now. Happily, these Topman kicks combine the hard-worn look with a lightweight construction.
($120 from Topman.com)
Original Penguin Caviar Ribbed Cotton "It's a Score" Crewneck Sweater
McGregor's all-black jacket, jeans, sweater and scarf combo is an effortlessly cool cold weather creation. This Penguin cotton number should suffice for a brisk spring day -- substitute for a classic black tee if the weather is any warmer. ($53 from Bluefly.com)
Cheap Monday Tight Fit Overdyed Black Jean
Cheap Monday's bargain denim may no longer be Sweden's best kept secret. The brand has been widely available in the U.S. for a couple of years now -- but until someone comes along with a better value for the classic skinny rocker pant, they'll remain our favorite Nordic export. ($65 from UrbanOutfitters)
Diesel Sliced Black Scarf
($15 from Ssense.com)
Seven Silver Plain Ring
All-black threads with a simple silver jewelry makes for a timeless, rocker-style look. ($101.50 from Asos.com)
