It's the time of year when the major television networks announce their new crappy shows and put on big, glitzy, ass-kissing presentations to impress media and advertising executives. So says veteran comedian Michelle Maryk of the presentations called "upfronts," where networks attempt to excite advertisers with previews of the shows they have picked up for the fall season. The goal is to get advertisers to pay money "up front" to buy time on certain shows. These dog and pony shows are the subject of Maryk's and the WLC Network's spoof "UPFRONTS," which begins a four-show run this Tuesday at the PIT, located in Chelsea.
"It's so ripe for the picking," Maryk, writer and executive producer of UPFRONTS, tells Asylum. "We created a fake network, fake TV shows and shot fake promos, which gave us the opportunity to create lots of characters."
Like the real presentations, which consist of extended clips and live appearances by stars, "UPFRONTS" is a mixture of recorded material and live appearances from the many ridiculous characters from the fake shows.

"We tried to cover all the major genres," says Maryk, who plays five characters herself. "We did an 'Office' rip-off which takes place in an interior design office, but the female host actually has a penis. We also did a 'Grey's Anatomy' spoof called 'Blind Rx.' It's very glossy and saturated and the main character is a sexy neurosurgeon who happens to be blind."Maryk says they will show clips of "UPFRONTS" online and might make an extended run in Chicago or Los Angeles if the show gets a good response.
Asked just how much ass-nudity, bikinis and fake penises audiences can expect, Maryk says, "A lot. Ass nudity is well represented. 'Blind Rx' has a lot of bikinis, and the penises show up twice. They might even have their own puppet show."
WLC's 'UPFRONTS' premieres Tuesday, May 4, at the PIT. Tickets are $10 at the door or $8 in advance.
