We're not really sure how one dances while riding a bike, particularly when dressed in glam-rock attire. Alas the Bowie Dance Ride kicks off tonight in Thompson Square Park at 7 p.m.

Bicyclists are encouraged to dress like David Bowie's Ziggy Stardust or any other one of his guyliner'd alter egos. (Helpful hint: Feather boas and platform shoes seem like a bad idea when you're pedaling at 10 mph.)

Environmental organization Time's Up! is behind the event -- and likely any other dancing-bike party you may have seen around the city (like the Ladies' Night Dance Ride, seen at left) -- and is hoping it will raise awareness for creating a more sustainable NYC.

But why focus on David Bowie and not, say, biodiesel-loving Willie Nelson or some other celebrity who takes green to the extreme?

"We chose David Bowie because he reaches a wide cross section of people with upbeat music," says Bill DiPaola, director of Time's Up! "Bowie has always had cutting-edge fashion concepts and music ideas much like Time's Up! pushing the boundaries on sustainable change."

Yeah, right. We think it's because it's funny to watch people try to bicycle in leather pants.
