By six months, humans have already developed a fairly strong sense of morality.Researchers at Yale ran a series of experiments where infants watched scenes acted out with dolls. In each experiment a doll was portrayed as helpful, while another doll was actively unhelpful. For example, 6-month-old babies looked on as a stuffed dog attempts to lift a lid. A teddy bear appears and either tries to help the dog lift the lid or sits on the lid, making it harder to lift. After watching each scenario, the infants showed a preference for playing with the helpful teddy bear.
At 21 months, children will give treats to the helpful dolls and take away treats from the unhelpful ones. Some children will even beat on the unhelpful dolls.
So if babies understand evil, does that confirm the baby who won't stop crying on the airplane is evil? We think so.
