Our second of 12 candidates for America's Next Top Beer ...Two-Hearted Ale
Bell's Brewery -- Kalamazoo, Mich.
"Michigan is an underrated beer Mecca," according to expert Joe Sixpack. Perhaps not for long. Bell's Brewery has been selling fine craft beers for 25 years now, spreading from their modest beginnings in Kalamazoo throughout the Midwest and into spots up and down the East Coast.
And their Two-Hearted Ale might take them even farther. Sweet, smooth and super-clean, this is what hopheads call a quintessential "session beer" (as in, the kind of beer that begs you to drink another and another during your session).
"It's a fantastic IPA," says The Beer Wench. "It was that exact beer that turned me into a hophead and inspired me to learn more about the process of making beer." It's a session beer, it's an epiphany beer ... is there anything Bell's Two-Hearted Ale can't do?
The final word:
Joe Sixpack: "Fresh"
The Beer Sommelier: "Go-to"
Jay Jankowski: "Hop-o-licious"

If you can, try to find this on cask. The aroma is other-worldly and goes down so smoothly. The only place I've seen it on cask was Pizzeria Paradiso in Georgetown (fantastic restaurant for pizza and beer)

i've been preaching about two hearted for awhile now.
it's no secret that in michigan, the best microbrew is Bell's, but two hearted is often overlooked for their orange flavored Oberon
i've shipped out six packs (by request) to friends in seattle, denver, atlanta, and san francisco just because they miss it.
two hearted #1

Bell's the best? Two Hearted hoppy? You best not try Short's Huma Lupa if you think Two Hearted is hoppy ladies. Ibu's top the charts.

Every beer snob loves a hoppy beer, perhaps because the every-day macro brews are so hop-deficient. I would imagine, however, that a very hoppy beer will not win over the public at large (though they should all learn the error of their ways!).

Fat Tire is number 1 right now, so that pretty much proves your point. They also are bigger and probably have more distribution than anyone else on this list.... guess that helps too! The smallest brewery on here, Alesmith, is last. Go figure!

I love Bells Two Hearted Ale, but I wouldn't exactly call it a session beer... My understanding of a session beer is one that you could drink all day long, ie. usually of relatively lower gravity, or one would just get obliterated drunk. at 7%, Bells is one great IPA, but not exactly low enough on the abv for me to consider it a session beer.
Not that I'm an expert, but if I had to, Id probably put a cap on "session" beer of 6% or so...

I've never really been into IPAs, always a stout guy. Thus, my first foray into Bell's was their Expedition Stout, which to this day is my favorite stout of all time, imperial or not. I had heard a lot of good things about Two-Hearted but hadn't seen it in Miami.
One day, I visited a qiuck stop that i had heard had been getting into Microbrews. So I stopped in and saw the Holy Grail there (not that crappy English beer, I was alluding to Two-Hearted). I bought it and took it home to rate. The following is what I had written that night (June 2nd, 2009):
"Oh, that s amazing. Like the maharaja (an IPA from Avery), this has way more going for it than just hops. I taste honey, rosewater, cookies, nutmeg. It s like a winter spice beer mixed with an IPA. I now can say that I m a fan of the style. Gorgeous head with the darkest body I ve seen on an IPA. BUY THIS!. Bottle at quick stop in South Miami."
Yeah, it's still that good.

I recently moved from the Midwest to the West Coast and while there are tons of world-class beers out here, I still miss the Michigan, Indiana and Wisconsin classics like this.
