Shyness negatively affects the quality of relationships -- even marriages.Researchers at the University of Tennessee recently found that shy people have more severe marital problems during their newlywed period when compared to their more outgoing counterparts. More specifically, the shy reported a higher percentage of struggles with their partners over trust, jealously, money and household management.
As a marriage progresses, the researchers discovered that shyness continued to be linked to problems. They were able to conclude that one person's innate reservedness -- not the fact that difficulties early in the marriage had made the couple less communicative -- is typically driving these continuing struggles.
The study's authors believe the higher levels of social anxiety that go with being shy leaves a less-outgoing person unable to deal with marital problems head-on.
They may struggle at sharing their life with their spouse, but shy people are still the best kind of people to share space with on any form of public transportation.

Low self-esteem and personal insecurities exist with out-going people as well. The overt comedian always needs attention and loves to be the center of attention. Everyone has insecurities. Fact of life. I believe shy people are more honest, have more self-awareness and have a much better understanding of themselves than do obnoxious crowd pleasers.

This IS interesting and something I never knew:

"Yikes you guy are worrrying about grammar annd spelling. I'd worry more about AOL's sneaky infringement on your privacy.
I bet you didn't know you have a "profile" which includes every message you've ever posted on ANY AOL board. It was set up automatically linked to your EMail address ... when you "verified' you first comment."
It should be more than obvious because your 'name' in the comment section is highlighted, which means it is a link to somewhere, something. Who knew. Guess it's time to be more observant. Maybe some of these people posting rude comments will take the time to go back and look to see what they've written for the public to see. Good 'self-awareness' lesson for sure!

Has AOL fixed the mistake? I read "affects", which is correct! More to the point, it is ridiculous to say that "shy people are bad at marriage". How bad? Worse than anal retentive people? Worse than addicts or abusers? The statement implies that ALL shy people are bad at marriage which is easily disproved. This "study" would seem to be part of that old "publish or perish" syndrome, a persistent disease among academics.

Shy people take longer to make TRUE friends, they are less likely to open up. That may be why they have a smaller field when it comes to selecting a mate, and takes them longer to adjust. But I seen no relationship between shyness and poor marriages. All the proof one needs is to look at hollywood. Surely there is no shyness there, and the marry and have affairs right and left. Only about 1% of those marriages last more than a decade.
Shy people may be poorer marriage risks, but if one gets past the shyness, you will have a spouse that will stand by you until the end of days. So much better than having to find a new one every few years.
On must get over their extrovertive self if one wishes to attain the security the introvert will bring them. Introvert types are not out or on the phone or computer with the boyz/girlz all the time. They come home to YOU, and they want to be with YOU. They may take a little longer to become the "perfect" person, but you could do a lot worse - and end up with a lot more problems (STDs) than a spouse who seems cold or uncaring.
He/she did marry YOU, not somebody else, so there must be something there. Quit looking for so much, be happy with what you have. The rest will come, but only if you give it time.

quoting websters dictionary--- affect-to bring about a change in;have an EFFECT on/ "bright light affects the eyes/ to make feel sad or sympathetic/ the child's accident affected us deeply'. affect 1- to like to have, use, or wear, etc.(she affects plaid coats) 2- to pretend to have,be, feel,like,etc./ although he disliked sports, he affected an interest in baseball./ now, all you gramaphobes, how about discussing the CONTENT OF THE ARTICLE? you people put a new twist on shallow and an old twist on fake superiority. grow a heart. these people are trying. that's what counts. learning takes a lifetime.

I'd like to know how the author could back-up this data? It seems very skewed. I have a strong feeling that the author is not a shy person and from the beginning of the 'study' sees shy people in a negative light.

Affect and effect have nothing binding with pschology they are simply put
Affect "influence, encourage, change"
Effect "outcome, result"
Red Cordial affects the colour of water
Red Cordial effects on water are colour change and added flavour.
