Now that "Lost" has sailed off to TV heaven, it's important to remember the hardcore fans who stood by the series through all the polar bears, glowing caves and Nikki and Paulo antics. Last night fans showed their loyalty by attending viewing parties, dressing up as as their favorite characters and dining on Dharma-brand peanut butter. In honor of the finale, we saluted one group of brave fans who holed up in a bar and attempted to watch every single "Lost" episode in one heroic marathon beginning last week. The trio of college friends wasn't just trying to make sense of the mythology -- they were attempting both to raise money for charity and break the Guinness World Record for most consecutive hours spent watching television.
While we applauded the "Lost"-a-thon crew's valiant efforts (and the fact that they were sitting through the excruciating Bai Ling episode), reader John F.C. Taylor thought that watching nearly 94 hours of straight television wasn't all that impressive.
John writes, "Why not try 'Charmed' instead. More episodes to watch than 'Lost.' How about 'M*A*S*H'? 'Gunsmoke'? A bunch of others that have run longer than 'Lost.'"
While 178 hours of Alyssa Milano in various low-cut tops isn't the worst thing we can imagine, attempting to get through all of "Gunsmoke" in one sitting would probably drive a person insane. While "The Simpsons" surpassed "Gunsmoke," in terms of longevity (21 seasons and counting), the classic Western series still holds the record for most episodes aired: 635, as opposed to "The Simpsons"' paltry 464. Our guess is that a similar "Gunsmoke"-a-thon would result in a viewer officially losing his or her marbles around episode 250 or so.
If you decide to try it anyway, definitely let us know how it goes. (But don't say we didn't warn you.)
