Charles McMahon has had his fair share of cabbie experiences -- he's been behind the wheel for close to 40 years. While he doesn't frequent the city very often (he only drives on Sundays, and hails from Stony Brook), he's discovered the best place for authentic grub in Little Italy, while chauffeuring around one certain "Working Girl."
Keep reading to find out about Charles's restaurant recommendation and his run-in with Mrs. Antonio Banderas.
What's your favorite thing to do in the city?
I love going to "The Christmas Show" at Radio City in the winter.
Do you have a restaurant you love eating at before the show?
Everything in Little Italy is great. Original Vincent's on Mott Street has the best lobster ravioli and steamed clams.
You've been driving for quite some time. Any crazy stories?
Years ago the bellman at Trump International hailed me down and a young lady got into the car. We started chatting, I asked her what she did for work, and she was coy and mentioned a bunch of movies she'd been in. I never heard of any of them.
So did you ask her what her name was?
She told me her name was Melanie Griffith. I told her I'd seen that name around and it sounded sort of familiar. She said, "Maybe you know my husband, Antonio Banderas?" And I said, "Nope! Don't know him either."

The Original Vincent's

Of all the thousands of cabbies in NYC, you interview a guy who drives a cab one day a week. I learned nothing from this man. Oh wait, he did say Little Italy had great Italian food. Great article.
