People who play video games before they go to sleep seem to have better control over their dreams -- particularly their nightmares.

Jayne Gackenbach, a psychologist at Grant McEwan University, in Edmonton, Alberta, previously found that gamers are more likely to report that they have lucid dreams. In addition, she reported that they have dream control, which means the dreamer can actively influence their dreamworld.

Her latest work is a more complicated study, in which the dreams of gamers and non-gamers were independently analyzed. The results suggest gamers suffer fewer nightmares and are more likely to turn their nightmares into fun, video-game-like challenges.

There is hope this research could aid those who suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder, of which nightmares are a common symptom.

Perhaps the reason gamers are so cavalier about nightmares is that when they die in their dreams, they always have a life left.
